William Hardman Obituary

WILLIAM (BILL) MORGAN HARDMAN
1933-2008

William (Bill) Morgan Hardman died Tuesday May 27th 2008. Bill was born November 16, 1933 in Saint Albans, WV. He completed his Masters degree and joined the Navy in 1957 to be a pilot. While serving in the Vietnam War he was captured in 1967 and released in 1973. Bill was an accomplished airman with these metals: Silver Star, Legion of Merit with Combat "5", Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal with Gold Star "5", Navy commendation Medal with Combat "5", Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Bill retired as a Navy Commander in 1977. He continued to contribute to the Navy by donating his time to the Navy Aviation Museum in the Library Archives. He donated more than 10,000 hours of his time during the last 17 years. He was known to many as the walking legend; some would say he was a walking encyclopedia bursting with aviation knowledge. He was also known for his participation in the Pensacola Modelers Club for many years.
He was survived by his brother Thomas B. Tompkins of Saint Albans, WV, daughter Susan Hardman Britt of Winter Haven, FL and son David Bruce Hardman of Melbourne, FL and many friends who loved and respected him.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in the Barrancas National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
EASTERN GATE MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive family and friends on Monday, June 2, 2008 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel.

Dear Hardman Family,
Thank you for sharing Bill with us. We worked together at the museum where Bill was the hands down expert on naval aviation for those of us in the research section. Hand Bill a photograph of an ancient naval aircraft and he could if pressed fill in all the details. He was not one to flaunt his knowledge but ask and he would give you a detailed straight answer.

Bring up a baseball question and Bill could if asked, fill in all the facts of the game he loved from the encyclodepia in his mind.

Life dealt Bill a load of difficulties, he worked through them and in the process became a man respected by his peers and admired by those of us who stood in his shadow. May we remember the best, forgive the past and work out our own path of life.

Thank you Bill for the lessons.

Bill, you will be missed. What an honorable man. Very rare indeed. To the family, I pray the Holy Spirit will comfort you in your time of loss. May He give you the peace that passes all understanding.

I did learn a lot from Bill in the modeling realm, thanks Bill. The last time I saw him I was helping him put his new wing on his Crusader in the case after our Saturday meeting. I noticed he had a grin on his face as he admired his work and seemed to say "that looks like it should now". He was indeed a stickler for accuracy and I appreciate that. I wish I could have spent more time with him personally and shared in his experiences and knowledge. We have so much to learn from men like him.

Thank you Bill for the time I got to know you. It wont be the same without your presence.

I served with Bill in Viet Nam. He was second seat in my A6 when he and Leo were shot down. I was the plane captian of the Skippers plane and Bill was the B/N. May God be with his family and friends as they travel thru these times. God bless Bill, he was a real American Hero.

I remember wearing the POW bracelet with his name on it when we were kids in the late 60's and early 70's, I was told he was my Uncle Bill Hardman, he was my father's first cousin , so I guess we were cousins. I made copies of the news reel made right after he was shot down in '67 onto VHS in the 90's and gave them to his Mom, my great Aunt Sadie. My grandmother Kathryn Morgan Nease was Sadie's sister. All gone now. Rest in Peace. My thoughts are with you Chief and your family.

As Bill's first cousin, we were childhood playmates. I enjoyed watching him make model airplanes and drop his metal soldiers tied to large white handkerchieves from the roof of our Morgan grandparents' chicken coop. I adored him as a high school baseball star, prayed for him as a POW, rejoiced at his release and will always be proud that he was a great American hero and patriot. Truly the love of his life was airplanes and the military. My sympathy to David, Susan and Chief.

An email arrived from Hal Tippin informing me of Bill's passing.. Over the years visiting the Naval Aviation Museum, Bill was my contact and guide gathering data for the next Monogram, Accurate, or Trumpeter project. He was always "ready, willing, and able" and I truly enjoyed working with him on each and every visit.

I admired Bill for his dedication, commitment, and sacrifice, and even though life may have dealt him a less than perfect hand, he was a true gentleman who I respected for so many reasons..

Godspeed Commander.. you will be missed by so many whose lives you have touched..

Bill was my first cousin and we were within 6 months of being the same age. Bill and I attended West Virginia Tech together and I was with him in 1973 when he was inducted into the WVIT Hall Of Fame for his baseball prowess. I thought of him continually when he was a POW for 6 years and that period certainly took a toll.My sympathy to his daughter Susan, son David and brother "Chief"

Bill was a person who liked to be alone, but was lonely. He loved his books, music and building model airplanes. He was proud of his children and he was my best friend. I'll miss him.

My Mr. Bill,
I always called you my surrogate father because you meant so much to me. I will always remember our favorite saying (in the old days) "You can't eat on an empty stomach". I will miss you so much and I will always remember you.
