Joyce Metcalf Obituary

Metcalf, Joyce DeWitt,

67, who lived her beliefs, went to her Heavenly Father October 7, 2014 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

She was a kind, friendly, generous, very giving and dependable person to family, friends and everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Nathan Wayne Metcalf; brother, Donald DeWitt; and sisters, Wanda DeWitt and Betty Schoedinger.

Joyce was the faithful and loving wife of Wayne Metcalf, who will greatly miss her support, strength, guidance, and her loving and constant companionship; the loving and caring mother of Tiffany Mays (Kevin); a loving "Mamaw" to four grandsons whom she adored; Owen, KJ, Ethan and Dillon (her shadow) all who described her as "so awesome, strong, happy, joyful and fun" and will all miss her playful and generous personality and night time backscratching; her brothers, James, Kenny (Kimalee), Bobby (Margie), and Gary; and sister, Kimberly Age.

Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 11 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3345 Lexington Road with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.

I am so sorry for your loss. Joyce and I played sports together at the Patch and graduated together from Manual in 1965. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. She was always such a fun and happy person. My sincere sympathy for your loss. God be with you, your family and friends.

Wayne, you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. There are no words to exoress our sympathy. We only spent a little time with you and Joyce when we were with John and Sherry. I did not know Joyce well, but after being introduced by my loving sister n law Kimalee, Kenny's wife, I soon realized that Joyce was a loving, friendly person that always greeted me with a sweet smile and a welcoming hello! May you be at peace at home with our loving God.

Joyce was always very welcoming and kind to me. She was always upbeat. I am so thankful that we, her brothers and wives, got together on Wednesday, 10/1, for an evening of reminiscing and laughter. She said that she loved the times like that. We were getting ready to leave, thinking we were tiring her, and she asked that we stay a while longer and keep sharing memories. She was loved very much and will be missed greatly. Rest in Peace, Joyce.

I am so glad I got to visit with Joyce last week. I was able to go over and trim her hair and make her feel better. Was a nice visit. I haven't been in the family for 19 years but she made me feel like family. She was a wonderful, giving and beautiful person who will be greatly missed.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the DeWitt family and to all of those who knew and loved Joyce. I'll always fondly remember the days we all spent together growing up on Shelby Parkway. She was a remarkable person and will be missed by many.
