Alfred Matacia Obituary

Alfred (Al) Carmelino Matacia passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. His beloved wife Barbara Wolcott and his loving stepdaughter Stacey Wyatt were by his side.

Al was a very caring person. His sense of service goes back to his Charlottesville High School days where he served in many service clubs and was known as a friend to all. Following high school graduation Al attended the University of Virginia until his studies were interrupted by the Korean war when Al enlisted as a corporal in the United States Air Force.

Upon his return to Charlottesville, Al joined the family owned Matacia Food Company as a partner and route salesman calling on restaurants and stores. A job he sincerely loved because Al loved people and they loved him as well.

Always the admirer of lovely ladies Al became a certified judge of both local and state Miss America pageants. A "hobby" he enjoyed for years.

Al's commitment to service did not end with his military career. Some of the organizations with which he served are the Charlottesville JC's, Charlottesville Lions Club and much of Charlottesville is enhanced by the scores of dogwood trees that were sold and planted during Al's 44 years volunteering and actively participating in the Charlottesville Dogwood Festival, serving twice as President. Al was especially proud of his involvement in the creation of the Charlottesville Dogwood Vietnam Memorial Foundation.

Upon the closing of Matacia Food Company, Al joined Real Estate 3 as a salesman. He obtained his brokerage license. This license enabled him to open his own real estate firm, Matacia Real Estate. With his traditional good humor and tireless service, he became immersed in the REALTOR community. Al enjoyed success until his retirement. Al's contribution to the Local, State and National REALTOR associations cannot be over-stated. He served in virtually every leadership position of his home association in Charlottesville, including President. Within the Virginia REALTORS association, Al gave untold hours of his time, expertise and energy on multiple committees including Director and Dean of the REALTOR Institute. Al was honored as a charter member of the Virginia REALTORS Hall of Fame. On the national level, Al was a national Director and was inducted into it's honorary fraternity Omega Tau Rho.

Al's devotion and contribution to everyone will always be remembered.

Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Carmelino Francis Matacia and Louise Elizabeth Corbin Matacia and his beloved son Scott Carmelino Matacia. His memory will forever be cherished by his loving stepchildren, Stacey Wyatt, husband Tony Wyatt, James W. Wolcott IV, his wife Badria Wolcott, Kimberly A. Wolcott, her husband Michael Keithley, many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well.

Always loving, always caring, Al is leaving behind many beloved friends and dear ones (especially the breakfast group).

A reception will be held in his honor on Sunday, July 18th at the Greencroft Country Club, 575 Rodes Drive in Charlottesville, VA from 3:00-5:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Intrepid Hospice in Virginia Beach, in his name.

I met Al at Hardees in Virginia Beach. We were both avid sports fans, attended UVA, and loved the Hoos. I will miss his UVA sports updates and "GO HOOS" texts. I extend my deepest sympathies to Barbara, Stacey, and the rest of his extended family. He will be greatly missed.

Al was my neighbor for all my years on Lyons Court Lane in Charlottesville. He was a fine man, a great example for my Children, and a good friend. My daughter Martha was one of his true loves. She was his influence for long lunches at Lord Hardwickes Restaurant where she was the Bar Tender. Their relationship was always plutonic !!! We will miss you Al !!

I am so very saddened to hear of Als' passing. He was the most handsome and classiest man I knew. Whe I had my daughter almost 52 yrs ago, Al brought a bag of fruit to the hospital for me. He was always a good friend to everyone. I will never forget him. Prayers and condolences to the family.
