Antal Feher Obituary

Antal "Tony" Feher, Jr., age 75, passed away, Thursday, November 15, 2018 with his wife by his side. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he was the son of the late Antal Feher, Sr. and Katalin Feher. To hear Tony tell the harrowing tale about hoe he and his family left Budapest, and everything they had ever known, to escape Soviet oppression was fascinating. They were in a mad rush to get out across the Austrian border in the dead of night, within earshot of armed patrolmen. He, his father and mother, and three sisters made their way to a US Military base in Germany and then on to America. He was 14 years old in the first grade, where he learned to speak English for the first time. When he was 19 years old, he married for the first time and started having children by age 21. Clearly, he was meant to be a dad. There was nothing he wouldn't do for his kids and grandkids. Tony was a handyman, an avid do-it-yourselfer who managed several rental properties, and would constantly create new projects for improvements around the house. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed playing bridge. He loved music and was always whistling or singing. Tony had an amazing green thumb, spending hours planting and maintaining his flower beds. Along with his parents, Tony was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosza Parker and Marika Marton, his son-in-law Jesse Smith and his dog, Lexi. Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Rachel Pomeroy Feher; his children, Mary Kathleen Feher Smith of Gates, NC, Rebecca Feher-Bryner (Jeff) of Virginia Beach, VA, Anthony Antal Feher (Lisa.) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Richard Alexander Feher of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Joel, Jennifer, Jonathan, Danielle, Zachariah, Amanda, Darien, Nicholas, and many fur babies; one great grandchild, Serenity; sisters, Ibolya Bettis of Virginia Beach, VA, Viola Filter of Tracy, MN, and Alice Mangum of Virginia Beach, VA; special cousins, Karcsi' and Margit Mile; many nieces and nephews and his cat Kitti. A Celebration of Life services will be held at a later date in Virginia Beach, VA. Since Tony always donated to areas affected by natural disasters, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Survivors of the California Wild Fires, The Flood Victims of Conway, SC, or the charity of one's choice. While I did not know "Tony" well as he was a few years older than I, his sister Rosza was my classmate and friend from the fourth-grade until her accidental death as an adult many years later here in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Tony's first wife Peggy was also my classmate and friend all through our shared growing up and schooling years in Franklin, Virginia. I send my deep sympathy to Tony's extended family from someone who vividly remembers his family's arrival in America after their brave escape from Communist Hungary so long ago. His family was a wonderful addition to our small city of Franklin. I know in my heart that Tony is now reunited with his parents and other family members. May the Lord be with his family here until they too are one day reunited with Tony in Heaven.
