Anthony Sheridan Mauer VIRGINIA BEACH - Anthony Sheridan Mauer passed away peacefully at home Sept. 3, 2010. Born in Detroit on March 5, 1943 to the late Gertrude S. and Raymond J. Mauer, Tony grew up in Old Greenwich and Riverside, Conn., and attended St. Mary's High School in Greenwich, Conn. An avid outdoorsman, at the age of 13 Tony became an Eagle Scout, at the time the youngest ever in Greenwich. Tony graduated from the University of Connecticut where, as a walk-on, he played four years of college football, both offense and defense. A newspaper clipping quotes his coach as saying, "Pound for pound, Tony is as tough as anyone on this team." Upon graduating, Tony moved to New York City, and tried his hand at acting. He appeared off-Broadway in "Friends," and later appeared in movies such as "Goodbye, Columbus" and "The Godfather," as well as on television in such dramas as "The Edge of Night." Moving to the other side of the lens, Tony proved to be a gifted, internationally recognized photographer. His professional credits include pieces published in Life, McCall's, Redbook and many other consumer and trade magazines, and portraits of many distinguished public figures and dignitaries. Tony was the official photographer for the Theater Hall of Fame in New York City, where he photographed many celebrities such as Lillian Gish, Grace Kelly, Al Pacino, Geroge C. Scott, etc. He also photographed The Christopher Awards for many years in New York City. His portraits are remarkable in that the subject always seems to express something very personal. After 20 years in New York City where he raised his daughter Lara, Tony moved his photography business to Virginia Beach, where he married the love of his life, Ann Russell Hines. In addition to his photography, he and his wife, "Russ," operated a real estate management business in Virginia Beach. He also was the official photographer for the Norfolk Forum for 10 years. Tony approached life with a rare positive intensity. His natural goodness, easy warmth and wit, and limitless kindness affected everyone who knew him. He will be terribly missed by those who survive him, including his wife "Russ" of Virginia Beach; daughter Lara Mauer of Claxton, Ga.; foster child, Tatiana Rotolo of Benicia, Calif.; brothers, Paul of Conroe, Texas and Michael of San Francisco; sisters, Patricia Fitzpatrick of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., and Sherry Petersen of Stratford, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Family, 1279 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Friends and family will be received today, Sept. 9, between 6 and 8 p.m. at 229 87th St. in Virginia Beach. Flowers are welcomed at the church, and memorial contributions may be made to the International Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia Foundation (IWMF) or to the University of Connecticut Football Program.
