To a life well lived!
Mr. Cooper had a monumental impact on generations of students by sharing, teaching and mentoring his love of music, and te excitement of competition.

I was proud to be a Kempsville Chief and cherish the three years spent uner his direction. I like many others felt that this time was the highlight of school that has had an impact throughout life.

Billy T. Cooper was one of the greats.

My deepest condolences to the family. Many of the happiest and most fulfilling moments in my life were spent in Mr. Cooper's bandroom preparing for winter concerts, Concert Festivals and Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Mr. Cooper sparked a love for classical music within me that still remains. May he rest in peace.

Though it is many years ago now, my memories of Billy T. Cooper are still very fresh. He was a terrific bandleader, an enthusiastic musician, and a wonderful storyteller - all the traits of a great teacher. I would not have chosen my path as a professional musician, if not for Mr. Cooper's inspiring love of music. I know he will be greatly missed by his family, but his joy of life carries on in his many students.

I am so very thankful for the influence and love of music that Mr. Billy T. Cooper inspired in me and so many of my friends. He was a fine teacher and not only did he expect the best from all of his students but he gave us a way to get there by making music fun and memorable. May God bless you, Cooper family, and thank you for sharing him with all of us.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
