Cora Harrell Obituary

Cora N. Harrell EDENTON - Cora N. Harrell, 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Jan. 16, 2009, in Norfolk. Cora was born April 17, 1912, in Edenton, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Henry and Martha Nixon and the wife of the late Alma E. Harrell. Mrs. Harrell enjoyed spending time with her family, volunteering in her church and serving her community. Many will also remember the time she spent working at Byrum's Gift Shop. She was a faithful member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and Edenton Baptist Church where she was active in the Georgia Carroll Sunday school class, WMU, the Joy Club and a devoted Sunday school teacher. She was an inspiration to her family and friends, leaving an incredible legacy of generosity. All who knew her were blessed by her spirit. Mrs. Harrell leaves to cherish her memory seven children, Christine Copeland and husband Willard of Hertford, N.C., Elwood "Fahey" Harrell and wife Amanda of Elizabeth City, N.C., Sandra Prentis and husband Richard of Chapel Hill, N.C., Arlene Evans, Janice Glisson, Rebecca Thomas and husband Robert and Susan Danchise and husband John, all of Virginia Beach. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, Anthony Copeland, Alfred Byrum, Eric Byrum, Timothy Copeland, Jason Evans, Marta Boyce, Alan Harrell, Kimberly DiLorenzo, Bryan Thomas, Rebecca Topping, Courtney Glenn and Molly Prentis; as well as 17 great-grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters, Elsie Bunch and Pearl Sawyer; one brother, Carlton Nixon; and a host of nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Emma Nixon and Eva Chesson and brothers, Rodney Nixon, Lloyd Nixon, Percy Nixon and her son-in-law, Carroll A. Evans Sr., predeceased her. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville St., with private graveside services for family at Beaver Hill Cemetery. The Rev. David Brooks and the Rev. Ralph Harrell will officiate. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. in Evans Funeral Home, 516 Virginia Road, Edenton, N.C., 27932. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Edenton Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 200 S. Granville St., Edenton, N.C. 27932. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Oman Funeral Home of Chesapeake and Evans Funeral Home of Edenton.
