Danny Barber Obituary

Danny Lee Barber

Norfolk - On October 3, 2016 God called our loved one, Danny Lee Barber home to a new adventure while his loving wife, son and daughter were by his side in the comfort of his own home. He was born in Perquimons County, NC on May 29, 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents Jesse Cameron Barber and Janie Barber Strong.

He leaves behind to cherish memories of their life together his friend and soul mate, Frances Sharpe Barber who was his beloved wife of 57 years and his most precious gifts from God; his son David Gary Barber and daughter Katherine Lee Barber (Karon Ransom) and granddaughter Barbara Jean Lindley. He also leaves his siblings; John Milton Barber (Bonnie), Hubert Dail Barber (Jackie) and sister Alice Jane Farrar. He was part of a large family whom he loved and who loved him and will miss his quiet, loving presence.

He always had a special place in his heart for all his nieces and nephews and their children and especially Thomas Gary Sharpe, III, Nicholas Chad Sharpe, Vincent Anthony Caravello Jeffery Barber. Other young people he mentored and enjoyed spending time with are Minh Mac, Lawrence Mao, Lorrie Diederich, Miguel Urbina, Charles Futrell and Ruth Ann Brian Hinkin.

He proudly served his country in the Virginia National Guard from 1959 to 1965. He was Vice-President of Walker & Laberge Co., Inc. and had been part of the W&L family for almost 50 years.

All of his life he was an avid sports fan and during his school years he played football and basketball. After graduation from Norview High School in 1956 he continued to play basketball and soft ball in community leagues in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. When he no longer played sports he began coaching Little League basketball, football and baseball and for many years served as a mentor and role model for young boys on his teams. In his early thirties he took up golf and as in other sports, he also excelled at this sport and twice had a hole-in-one at Cypress Point Country Club.

His love of travel took him and his wife and often other family members across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe and left them with many happy memories of trips shared.

Danny and his wife, Frances, knew each other for 4 years before they were married on October 3, 1959 and the love and devotion they shared with one another has been an inspiration to all who know them. He will be remembered by many for his quiet, loving and generous ways.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on October 7, 2016 at Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach by the Rev. Thomas Deppe. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. H. D. Oliver, Laskin Road is in charge of the arrangements. My sympathy to the Barber family on your loss. I've heard many stories about the close bond of the Barber brothers and how much they leaned on each other through the good and bad times. I know the pain of the loss will be tremendous for the entire family.
