David Doyle Obituary

David W. Doyle, aged 95, passed away on November 25, 2022, in Portsmouth, Virginia in his daughter's home. He is preceded in death by his parents James B. Doyle, Sr and Sallie Creasey Doyle, his brother James B. Doyle, Jr, and his son Marshall Doyle. He is survived by his wife of 69 ½ years Alice Bohon Doyle, his daughter Anne Doyle Hauer (David), his granddaughters Beverly Elizabeth Howard (Matt), and Lauren Paige Barr (Majeed Noroozi) and his granddog Huckleberry Hauer, his sister-in-law Norma Doyle and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Doyle was born in Roanoke, Virginia on January 31, 1927, and graduated from Jefferson High School class of 1945. He was an Eagle scout for troop 25 in Roanoke Valley, and a confirmed member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Roanoke. He also attended Roanoke College.

At the age of 17, he made his father sign for him to join the US Navy during World War II and he turned 18 in boot camp. He trained as a corpsman and served in Bainbridge Maryland, Portsmouth Naval Hospital and Camp Perry. He was honorably discharged when he majored in chemistry at Roanoke College and transferred to his beloved University of Alabama and graduated in the class of 1951. He was also a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at both colleges.

He went to work in Bloomington Indiana for the Department of Defense as a chemist. He married his college sweetheart Alice on May 2, 1953, and they to Indiana. They missed their native Virginia and moved to Portsmouth in 1957, where he worked for the annex at St. Julien's Creek weapons depot and later transferred to Yorktown weapon depot until he retired after 34 years of service to the Navy.

He was a member of First Lutheran in Portsmouth, and Holy Communion. He was a charter member and founding father of St. Andrew Lutheran church on High Street, where he knocked on doors for membership, broke ground, served on the first council and property committee and was a pitcher for the baseball team. He was also a member of the Churchland Masonic Lodge #276 and the Scottish Rite Bodies.

After retirement he and Alice moved to Florida to be full time grandparents. He also volunteered for the Skill bank, meals on wheels, enjoyed gardening, played golf and bridge; and was a member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Citrus Springs. His Christian walk involved service to his God, his family, his country and his community.

In 2021, he and Alice moved back to his beloved Virginia, where they resided with their daughter, son-in-law and granddog.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at St Andrew Lutheran Church 4811 High Street West, Portsmouth, VA 23703. A Masonic service will be held at 2 pm Friday, December 16, 2022, in Loving Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 4pm. Online condolences may be made at www.LovingFuneralHome.com.

I was Mr. Doyle's nurse shortly after he moved to Virginia until he was transferred to a different service. It was such a pleasure to take care of him. I wish I would have known that he passed because I would have definitely attended his services. Sending my condolences and prayers to his family.

I am sorry to read of Mr. Doyle's passing. While I myself did not know him, I know my mother was a friend from High School and perhaps before as I remember she spoke of him fondly. Her name was Mary Lucetta (Mary Lu) Cyphers. I'm thinking of your family during this time. Debbie Minter

My dad was Chris Cottrill. He worked for many years with Mr. Doyle at the St. Julien's Creek and Yorktown depots. In fact, they rode together back and forth to Yorktown and often stopped by our house near Smithfield so that my dad could visit his little grandson. How wonderful that Mr. and Mrs. Doyle had 69 years together! May the Lord give His grace and comfort to the family now.
