David Scott Obituary

David Evans Scott VIRGINIA BEACH - David Evans Scott passed away on July 5, 2010 at his home in Virginia Beach. He was born June 27, 1938 in Los Angeles to Allan and Laura Scott. Allan was a screenplay writer in Hollywood in the 30s, 40s and 50s, and Laura was a stage actress prior to their marriage. David was an exceptional man who led a very exciting life in academia and in the fields of music and sports. He also loved fishing in the waters of Scotland, Chile, Alaska and British Columbia, as well as hunting in the Adirondacks, Alaska and British Columbia. That was his idea of heaven. He enjoyed skiing, salvage diving, surfing and riding horses on the beach in Malibu. Even though David grew up in Hollywood in the company of movie legends, he chose not to be an actor, but in every aspect of his life, he was "on the stage." At Beverly Hills High School and Williamette University in Salem, Ore., David excelled in football, track and field, boxing and theater. Between college and graduate school at University of Southern California, David and three friends formed a folk group called The Wayfarers. They played the same venues as Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio. There was a time when the group considered making singing their career, but they eventually went their separate ways to excel in their chosen fields. David's career as a Ph.D. in anatomy took him from California to Rochester, N.Y., where he served as chairman of Anatomy, to Columbia, Mo., and then to EVMS in Norfolk, where again he served as chairman of Anatomy. During those years, David also served for 29 years in the Army Reserve Medical Corps, retiring as a colonel. David's number one love was teaching the medical students, physician's assistants and medical masters students in nonconventional ways such as using humor and music composed for various anatomy classes, and his famous "Triple Toot" as a reminder of very important information. In January 2010, David was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and spent time as a patient at Sentara Leigh Hospital. During those times, he was in the care of the physicians and PA's whom he taught. They loved him for encouraging them in their chosen fields and flocked to his room when they found out he'd been admitted. David is survived by his wife and caregiver, Gretchen; sister, Pippa Scott and her husband Lee Rich of Beverly Hills; son, Phillip Scott of Marin County, California; son, Charles Scott and his wife Chika and their son Lucas of Wynnewood, Pa.; and his stepdaughter, Justine Homer of Virginia Beach. The family would like to thank all of David's doctors and nurses and his Sentara Home Healthcare nurses, caregivers and volunteers for their loving care. David always said he'd done everything he'd ever wanted in life. He traveled the world for business and pleasure, spoke five languages and was a Master Guide in Alaska and British Columbia, but most of all, David wanted to be remembered as a teacher. A memorial celebration of David's life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Davis Corner Rescue Squad. You may offer condolences to the family at www.kellumfuneralhome.com.

Gretchen, We are so sorry for the loss you have experienced as well as the EVMS family. Although we only knew David briefly from the treatment room, we saw that he was indeed a special individual. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Scott was an inspiration to so many future health professionals at EVMS. He never tired of answering questions or giving advice to students. His vivacity for medicine, education, music, and life in general was contagious. He will be greatly missed in the halls at EVMS. I feel honored to have had him as a professor. He always had knowledge in his head, a joke on the tip of his tongue, and a song in his heart. Triple toot, Dr. Scott. My thoughts and prayers are with the Scott family.

William Arther Ward once said a mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains, a superior teacher demonstrates, and a great teacher inspires. Dr. Scott was a great teacher, who will truly be missed.

Dr. Scott was one of those special people you come across in life that you will never forget. Through his humour, gentle kindness and overall zest for life he gave more to his students in a one hour lecture than many do in a lifetime. Thank you for the memories you helped create during my time at EVMS...you will be missed "honk, honk, honk"!

David was a great friend and mentor and I attribute my early success in academia to his unfailing support, inspirational leadership and wonderful generosity. He introduced me to the international world of science and was instrumental in helping this then young, assistant professor at Rochester establish his laboratory. His teaching skills were legendary. We kept in touch through the ensuing 35 years and shared many thoughts about departmental leadership. He was always ready to help. David was a very special friend who has influenced the lives of thousands of physicians and scientists through his inspirational teaching and guidance.

Dr. Scott was one of the most inspirational teachers I have ever had. And I have had many. His passion was evident everyday. I will never forget him for his heart felt desire to motivate and guide his students through their learning. He will always be remembered by us. Thank you Dr. Scott.

I feel fortunate to have been a student of Dr. Scott's. He could regularly be found lingering in the anatomy lab at EVMS long after most students and faculty had left as long as there were students waiting to learn from him. I loved his enthusiasm for teaching and his wit, as well as his often unorthodox teaching style. We never knew when he might burst into song. I will miss him, and I will certainly never forget him.

David served as a mentor to me when I joined the faculty at Rochester in 1973 as a young assistant professor and I attribute any success I had in those days to his generosity, wisdom, unfailing support, and inspirational leadership. We collaborated on a number of research projects and he introduced me to the important world of international science. His teaching was outstanding and his sense of humor was legendary. The first time I heard him describe neuroanatomical structures in class as a "fine filigree of filamentous fibers" I about rolled out of my chair, as did our students. His command of neuroscience, the English language, and his stage presence were extraordinary.
He visited our home west of Rochester often and enjoyed bringing his then two young sons out to fish and swim. He also was responsible for cooking at our departmental picnics and was quite a chef (remember the pig roast?).
He went on to Chair the Department of Anatomy at Missouri and a few years later I accepted the Chair at Rochester. Through the years we shared many thoughts about leadership and I had the honor of visiting him at EVMS when he started a new Distinguished Speaker Series. It was clear that Dave was well loved and appreciated for his unique talents and complete dedication to teaching. He visited my new department in Chicago in the '90's and presented some guest lectures that were superb. David's unique spirit lives on in the hearts of so many students and faculty whose lives he touched that his influence will be felt for decades to come. I am honored to have been David's friend and colleague. John Sladek

Dr. Scott was a unique individual in his ability to combine scientific technicality with human creativity and compassion. He was a large part of what made my experience at EVMS as well-rounded as it was. I will always be grateful for his instruction, guidance, and encouragement. My sincere thoughts and prayers will be with his family during this time.

Dr. Scott was a wonderful teacher and friend. I will always remember his stories about Alaska, his family life in California and especially his singing. I will be strange not seeing him walking through the halls at EVMS singing or telling a joke.
He was a special man and will be missed.

Dear Gretchen,

Unfortunately the only way I knew David was through you and the wonderful stories we shared about travelling to different places in the world. I read the paper this morning and was trully amazed at how accomplished David was. I am so sorry that I never knew of his many accomplishments and even more sorry that I never knew him. I am sorry for your loss but am happy that you had the time that you did with him and I know that he fully loved and appreaciated your care.

God Bless you and yours and you are in my thoughts and prayers,
