Edward Avery Obituary
He is survived by his wife, Lee Ann Curtis Avery, their children and spouses, Ann Rodman and Gary Shook, Hannah Prillaman, Waightstill and Brook Avery, Adelaide and Dr. Christopher Turnbull, Clark and Catherine Avery, and his sixteen grandchildren, Ross, Avery, Rodman and Eliza Grace Shook, Walker, Ellis and Hughes Prillaman, Straeten, Leah and Meredith Avery, Charles, Owen and Ella Blake Turnbull, and Lucy, Camilla and Emma Avery.
Dr. Avery was raised in Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from Reynolds High School. He was a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served in the United States Marine Corps and was a graduate of The UNC School of Medicine. He practiced pathology at Norfolk General Hospital until his retirement in 1995.
An avid golfer who loved caring for his lawn, Dr. Avery was a devoted Tar Heel fan who rarely missed a game. He was a member of Cedar Point Country Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Norfolk German Club. He served on the Board of Directors of The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk.
Burial will be private and a Celebration of Life will be held at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Virginia Zoo.

To the Avery Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I’ll remember Dr. Avery with much fondness as we enjoyed the Avery tailgait before Carolina games. He was a proud tarheel and gracious enough to share his enthusiasm with his son’s friends. I am grateful.

Mrs. Avery and Family, Just wanted to let you know how saddened I am to hear of Dr. Avery's passing. I always enjoyed when he came into the office to go to lunch with Mr. Berkley. He was always up-beat and enjoyable company. I know you and your family are hurting and I just wanted to tell you that you are in my prayers and thoughts. I know the Lord will help you get through this difficult time.
