Edward Kavanaugh Obituary

Edward Kavanaugh Sr. NORFOLK - Edward Houston Kavanaugh Sr., 79, son of the late John W. Kavanaugh Jr. and Anna Welsh Kavanaugh of Roanoke, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 in Norfolk after a sudden illness. Eddie was born and raised in Norfolk, was president of the last graduating class of Holy Trinity High School in Ocean View, and well-known in the Tidewater area as a remarkable athlete. He went to Virginia Polytechnic Institute on a football scholarship, was in the ROTC, and was called to serve. He played quarterback for the Navy Tars and later returned to VPI until an injury ended his football career. In 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Eileen Gunn, his late wife of 41 years. He began his financial career at Waller & Woodhouse and after several years at Coley & Peterson, partnered with Ed Weddle and Charles Griffith to form J.E. Weddle & Associates, a successful general and mechanical contracting company. Using his athletic talents, he served as basketball coach at Holy Trinity and manager of many championship teams at NAS Little League. He was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3548, and a member of Padul Caravan No. 69 of the Alhambra. An avid golfer, Eddie spent many wonderful afternoons on the links with his sons, grandsons and incredible friends. He was loved and admired by all who knew him for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor and his passion for sports. He was truly one of the good guys and will be missed more than words can say. He is survived by his beloved partner, Carolyn Gunn of Smithfield; one daughter, Eileen K. Meusel and husband Robert of Virginia Beach; three sons, Edward H. Kavanaugh Jr. and partner Jen Croft of Southern Shores, Patrick Welsh Kavanaugh and wife Georgette of Norfolk, and John W. Kavanaugh and partner Efren Gonzalez of Los Angeles; one sister-in-law, Anne W. Kavanaugh of Norfolk; one daughter-in-law, Beth D. Kavanaugh of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren, Curtis P. Kavanaugh and Ryan W. Kavanaugh of Norfolk, Thomas Kavanaugh of Virginia Beach, Timothy M. Kavanaugh Jr. of Norfolk, Molly K. Kavanaugh of Jacksonville, Robert W. Meusel Jr., Colin Meusel and Kirby M. Carter, all of Virginia Beach; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his late wife, he was predeceased by two sons, Daniel J. Kavanaugh and Timothy M. Kavanaugh Sr. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father John Dorgan officiating. The burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com. My deepest sympathies are extended to the Kavanaugh family. As a neighbor, Ed would often stop and chat with me when he saw me in the yard, be it when he was walking or driving by in his car. He was a very kind hearted individual who always shared a sweet compliment of some kind to me. I will miss seeing him. ~Cheryl Fortner
