Edward C. Oldfield
Virginia Beach - Captain Edward C. (Barney) Oldfield, Jr., retired Navy Supply Corps Captain and former Corporate Executive of Landmark Communications and TeleCable Corporation died April 26, 2013 in Virginia Beach. He was 93 years old.
Captain Oldfield was born in Hampton, VA in 1919. His family moved to
Norfolk, VA in the same year.
Upon graduating from Maury High School in February 1937 where he was Vice President of his graduating class, he attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary (now Old Dominion University) and transferred to the University of Virginia in 1938, graduating in 1940 with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, Alpha Kappa Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma and the varsity swimming team.
Captain Oldfield was also a 1950 graduate of the Harvard Business School with the degree of Master of Business Administration, with Distinction, and was elected a Baker Scholar in recognition of academic achievement.
He was commissioned an Ensign, Supply Corps, US Naval Reserve in 1942 and accepted a commission in the Regular Navy in 1944. He retired from the Navy in January 1971, having served as Disbursing Officer, USS VULCAN (AR-5); Supply Officer, USS SPRINGFIELD (CL-66); and Supply Officer, USS NEREUS (AS-17) and Submarine Squadron FIVE. Other assignments included the Stock Finance Division and the Planning Division of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, Navy Department; Planning Officer and Comptroller, Naval Supply Center,
Norfolk, Virginia; Comptroller, Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Virginia; and Special Military Assistant to the Director of the Navy Budget, Officer of the Comptroller of the Navy. He was also Director of the Naval Audit Service,
Norfolk, Virginia; Deputy Commander, Defense Industrial Supply Center, Philadelphia, and Commanding Officer, Naval Supply Center, Newport, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of the Naval War College's Command and Staff Course and the first Senior Officer's Executive Management Course.
Upon retirement from the Navy in 1971, Oldfield joined TeleCable Corporation, formerly a subsidiary of Landmark Communications, Inc., as Assistant to the President. He was elected Treasurer in 1973 and Vice President, Corporate Development in 1974. With the spin-off of TeleCable from Landmark in 1984, Oldfield became Vice President and Assistant to the Chairman of Landmark Communications, Inc. He also served as Executive Director, Landmark Charitable Foundation. After retiring from Landmark Communications, he did consulting work on an independent basis for Landmark Target Media, Inc. in acquiring additional publishing companies for that division.
Oldfield had a long-standing interest in academia. He was a faculty member in the graduate evening programs of the University of Rhode Island and The George Washington University. He was a member of the Dean's Executive Advisory Council, on the Board of the Center for Economic Education and a visiting lecturer, all affiliated with Old Dominion University, School of Business and Public Administration.
He was a past President of the Harbor Club,
Norfolk, VA; Director, Kiwanis Beachcombers; member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club; and Treasurer and Director of the World Affairs Council. His biography is included in "Who's Who in America".
He was the son of Edward Charles Oldfield, Sr. and Alice Toomer Parrish Oldfield. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Lucy Garnett Jordan Oldfield; three sons: Captain Edward C. Oldfield, III, MC, USN (ret) and his wife, Stephanie Cole Oldfield of Norfolk; William M. Oldfield and his wife, Cynthia Crutchfield Oldfield of Virginia Beach; and Captain Henry J. Oldfield, USNR (ret) and his wife, Dona Peak Oldfield of Columbia, MD; and six grandchildren: Edward C. Oldfield, IV; John P. Oldfield; Grace V. Oldfield; Allen M. Oldfield and his wife, Nicole; Lindsey E. Oldfield and Matthew S. Oldfield. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Xavier Oldfield.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Church of the Holy Family, 1279 N Great Neck Road,
Virginia Beach, VA 23454 at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. A reception will follow the Mass. A private burial will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street,
Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to a
