Dr. Jones was my former Algebraic Structures professor and an inspirational educator. When I was in school studying math as an undergraduate at Norfolk State, she gave about 4 or 5 tests with no more than 5 questions on each test. They were tough exams but always fair. She would be willing to review the material even if it took countless hours. Dr. Jones was never monotone and it was always clear when she was enjoying the mathematics because her voice would fluctuate with passion and intensity. My fondest memories are when she would lecture, fill the entire board with notes, see a mistake, erase everything, and start over. In this way, she taught us never to fear making a mistake and to persevere. Another fond memory was that she knew I wanted to teach and allowed me to help her organize and assist with the Sonia Kovalevsky Day for she was awarded grant funding to increase girl's interest in mathematics. I will always carry as a badge of honor that I was taught by one of the first African-American women to earn a PhD in Math. She was a mentor to me and supported my success every step of the way. Prayers lifted for the family.

To: The Family of Dr. Eleanor Green Dawley-Jones
From: Dr. Archie W. Earl, Sr., Former Mathematics Professor & Faculty Senate President, Norfolk State University

I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of my friend and former colleague, Dr. Eleanor Green Dawley-Jones. She was an inspiration to us all, a great teacher and researcher.

I was a student at Norfolk State University, when she was hired, there, as a professor, in the Department of Mathematics, in the 1960s. During the 1980s, when I was a mathematics professor at Christopher Newport University, our paths would cross at National Association of Mathematicians (NAM) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA) meetings.

When I returned to Norfolk State University, in 1991, as a professor, in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, I was elated to find that she was still there. She always worked hard and always did an excellent job for her students, the faculty, the University, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Country. She was, indeed, one of our Great Women of Mathematics.

May God continue to bless and strengthen the entire family, during this time of loss. (Dr. Archie W. Earl, Sr., Former Mathematics Professor & Faculty Senate President, Norfolk State University)

It was an honor and a pleasure to work with Eleanor for many years in the Mathematics Department at Norfolk State University. She was the ultimate professional: an outstanding mathematician, a master teacher, and a person of the highest character. I will cherish always the memory of the bond that we shared in the glory days of the Mathematics Department. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family.
