Elizabeth Bartee Obituary


Elizabeth S. Bartee VIRGINIA BEACH - Anne Elizabeth "Betsi" Smith Bartee died peacefully in her home Jan. 10, 2008. She was the beloved wife of Albert Eugene Bartee for the past 30 years. Born in Williamsburg, Va., May 3, 1947, she was the daughter of Albert Lemuel Smith Jr. and the late Mary Ruffin Smith of Charles City, Va. She was a loving mother to her son, Christopher Andrew Brown of Virginia Beach. A graduate of The College of William and Mary, Betsi enjoyed a career as a broker with Thalhimer Commercial Real Estate. She served as a past president of the Commercial Real Estate Council, was a lifetime member of the Tidewater Builders Association, a member of Tidewater Association of Realtors and the Virginia Association of Realtors. She also was a member of the Junior League and a past youth group leader at All Saints Episcopal Church. Left to cherish Betsi's memory are her devoted sister, Susan Ruffin Travis Smith and husband Gene Marchi of Mill Valley, Calif.; brothers, John W. Smith and wife Barbara of Charles City, Va., Al Smith and wife Sheila of Dublin, Va., and J. Nelson Smith and wife Patti of Charles City; her loving and caring stepchildren, Susan B. Burnell and husband Robert of Orlando, Fla., William A. Bartee and wife Barbara of Sydney, Australia, Elizabeth B. Harrison and husband Phillip of Suffolk and Nancy L. Bartee of Norfolk. Survivors also include a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a goddaughter. The many friends, co-workers and lives she touched will always remember Betsi's generosity and kindness. A celebration of Betsi's life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Galilee Episcopal Church, 3928 Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, with the Rev. Dr. James B. Magness and the Rev. Carol Sims presiding. The family will receive relatives and friends afterwards in Tucker Hall. Contributions may be made in Betsi's honor to the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
