There are never enough words to express emotions, especially memories. When someone passes away all we have left are the memories we made with them . . . and sometimes the past emotions can never match present feelings and what must be done is a merging of the two.
Papa loved me as much as I loved him. Smelling him as he smoked his pipe, sitting in his lap sharing popcorn with him as we read the newspaper together. Our favorite was Garfield. Sometimes when there were no comic strips I’d make up headlines and stories for him to make him laugh.
Grampa made the ramp in the back of his house so I could get to school. In return I’d do my homework and help out my cousins with theirs at the kitchen table. He made a little stall with a roof so I could wait there for the bus if the weather was bad. Because of this, I sometimes ate dinner with papa and grandma.
I wanted a cat for my 11th birthday. We got 3 kittens for Easter instead. I chose Mittens but Molly chose me instead and she became the best cat on the farm. She lived till 20 and in her last decade she was Papa’s girl. For my graduation of high school I was given Ginger the min pin as a gift and I took care of her until she too passed away in 2009.
It was a pleasure to show papa my new cats in his final days and I was there to see him in the bedroom he gave to me as a child.
Keep looking out for me papa. Don’t worry, I’ll keep making up stories. And I know that somewhere, if I listen and pay attention, I’ll be able to hear your soft slow chuckle.

What I learned from my Dad....respect, responsibility, humor, never buy what you can’t afford, pay your bills on time, work hard and do the best that you can, love without words, and so much more. He was a good man, husband, father, grandpa, friend. I will miss him always.

I am so sorry for your loss . All of you are in my prayers . I’ll never forget him for as long as I live . How many people would buy a horse just so his daughter’s friend (me) could go riding with her (Dorothy) ? Elmer would and did do that . ❤ Love and prayers, Michelle

I remember Uncle Elmer for being a kind and caring person. He played an important role in my sister Ruth's decision to join the Coast Guard. We shared an interest in Cutherell family history in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake going back many generations. I treasure the pictures that I have of Uncle Elmer and Aunt Dorothy's various horses, goats, and geese, as well as their amazing blackberry bushes. He made this world a better place and will always be remembered.

I remember Uncle Elmer’s deep, quiet, and sloooow voice. Even more, I remember his big slow grin! Our sincere sympathy to Theresa, Dorothy, and Gail, and his grandchildren.
