Frances Mae Jefferies NORFOLK - Frances Mae Barlow Jefferies, 87, passed away Friday, June 8, 2011 and has gone to dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Mrs. Jefferies was born at Green Level Farm in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. In 1939, her family moved to Norfolk, where Mrs. Jefferies graduated from Maury High School in 1940. After graduation from Keyes Business College, she was employed at the Norfolk Naval Base during World War II. Her heroic actions saved the life of a young female Naval Officer after a bomb detonated on the base. Mrs. Jefferies is also an alumnus of the University of Virginia's School of Nursing. While in Charlottesville, Mrs. Jefferies met and married her husband of 52 years. She spent from 1950-1954 practicing her registered nursing skills in Charlottesville, Birmingham, Ala., Durham and Charlotte, N.C. Returning to Norfolk in 1954, Mrs. Jefferies was a homemaker and mother. She participated in activities at Talbot Park Baptist Church, the Norfolk Academy of Medicine Ladies Auxiliary, DePaul Hospital Auxiliary and the Lakewood Garden Club. During her lifetime, Mrs. Jefferies enjoyed music, gardening, traveling, her high school and School of Nursing reunions, visiting with friends and loving her six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Allan H. Jefferies; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hunter G. Barlow (Mary); her brother, John G. Barlow; her son-in-law, William A. Sult; and an infant grandson, Joshua Jefferies. Survivors include her children, Mayme J. Sult of Concord, N.C., Allan H. Jefferies Jr. of Harriman, Tenn., and John Randolph Jefferies (Karen) of Chicago. Her dearly beloved grandchildren are Robert Allan Jefferies, Jennifer Sult Kleinman (David), Stephen Joseph Jefferies, William Allen Sult II, Rebecca Lee Sult and Allan H. Jefferies III. Her special joy was her first great-grandchild, Jeffrey Davis Kleinman. She is also survived by her brother, Leonard Gray Barlow of Norfolk. A celebration of her life will be held at Talbot Park Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tim Dixon. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A reception will be held following the service in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are given to the General Fund at Talbot Park Baptist Church or to the American Diabetes Association. H.D.
