Helen J. Royall PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Helen Louise Jackson Royall, 88, of the 2300 block of Elliott Ave., went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, in Sentara Portsmouth Nursing Center. She was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Amelia, Va., to the late Nannie and Earnest Jackson. She was an active member before her illness and was also honored to serve as "Church Mother" at Trinity United Church of Christ. Mrs. Royall was a 1939 graduate of Russell Grove High School in Amelia Courthouse, Va. She retired on June 29, 1991 after dedicating 20 years of faithful service as a member of the dietary staff at Autumn Care of Portsmouth. Mrs. Royall was predeceased by her husband, James L. Royall Sr. and a son, Melvin Willis Royall. She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Ann Royall of Portsmouth, Joyce Royall Garrett (LaMarge) of Philadelphia, Helen Royall Caldwell of Chesapeake; two sons, Dr. James L. Royall Jr. (Valerie) of Chesapeake, and Barry Eugene Royall of Portsmouth; a loving brother, Jack Jackson (Toby) of Laguna Niguel, Calif; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews; and a host of relatives and friends. The viewing is Friday, Sept. 11, from noon to 7 p.m. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, by Pastor Charles C. Curry in the Steele-Bullock Funeral Chapel, 3950 Turnpike Road, Portsmouth. Family and friends will assemble at 2317 Elliott Ave. at 1:15 p.m. Saturday for the procession to the funeral home.
