At 76 years old I will never forget Mr. Southall, the watermelon man. As a teenager, I was about 15 years old. When I go in Big Lots and see the Old Henry candy bars, I always say to myself, Mr. Southall. Along with
Mr. Creekmore and Mr. Bruce Watts I will always cherish those memories across from the Circle Restaurant.

It is with heartfelt sympathy and our deepest condolences to Pam and Pat and the entire Southall family. Mr. Southall was a man of few words but of great stature. I will always remember his commentary on my riding or should I say pushing the riding lawnmower! He kindly reminded me of it when I saw him last year when he received his Trustee Emeritus award. Mr.Southall was dedicated to his family and to the Third Baptist church. He will truly be missed.

I will miss him. He used to walk straight as a arrow. His smile was contagious. He loved everyone. He took his job as a Trustee very serious. I loved him as a leader and mentor. He is going to be missed. Rest on soldier. You can't crown him until we all get there and what a time what a time. Hallelujah Praise the Almighty God.

Thoughts and prayers to his lovely daughters, know how proud he was of of you. I met Henry my first year of teaching in Portsmouth. He was witty and so helpful. He took me to many homes to complete paperwork and would always tell me just to follow his lead. I learned so much about education and how to converse with parents from him. I loved the fact that he would sell eggs. I know his heavenly reward will be amazing.

To the family and friends of Mr. Henry Southall I extend my deepest sympathy. I met Mr. Southall when Mr. Bruce Watts a Bail Bondsman came in the corner store regular to buy one of those old fashion Coca Cola's in the bottle. When he found out the store was closing, he asked if I wanted to work for him. When, I said yes, he told me to go to High Street at the fruit stand across the street from the Circle Restaurant and ask for Mr. Alan Creekmore. When I arrived, Mr Southall asked, who I was and Mr. Creekmore said that is Bruce's boy and the word went out that I was Bruce's son. So, I really felt special. Then Mr. Southall told Alan that I want him on my truck. Mr. Bruce said, I have been watching you and one day you are going to have your own store. When I returned back home from New York, I did have my own store. I never forgot that encouragement.
I remembered how Howard and I protected the truck while Mr. southall went in for lunch and I refused to give a man a cantaloupe and he punched me in my nose. When Mr. Southall came back, he said why didn't you come and get me, I would have had something for that guy? Howard told him I ran under those watermelons like a rat!
As a visiting Home Teacher, we were very impressed when he visited our home to see our special son.
I missed seeing Mr. Southall and I went by Third Baptist and asked his whereabouts. That is when I found out that he had moved to Texas with his daughter.
If I can assist in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.
