Herman Brice Ashley

1937 - 2022

Herman Brice Ashley, 84, of Spring Hope, NC, and formerly of Suffolk, VA, passed away Monday, January 10, 2022 in his home.

Mr. Ashley was born in Perquimans County, NC, on April 21, 1937, and was the son of the late John Francis and Myrtle Charity Williams Ashley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ertia Lane, Oneda Ashley, and Edith Overton, and by brothers, Robert, James, and Johnnie Lee Ashley.

A retired nuclear pipefitter from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA following 22 years of employment, he had also both farmed and worked as a contract grower for Purdue Farms for 30 years. Other enjoyments included fellowship in Snug Harbor Community Church, and his great love of competition drag racing in which he spent every spare minute of his time. In that sport, he was proud to have been a National Record Holder.

Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Powell Ashley; a daughter, Bonita Bertero (husband, Bruce) of Windsor, VA; a son, Shawn Ashley (wife, Lynn) of Spring Hope, NC; a sister, Thelma Lane of Toano, VA; four grandchildren, Lydia Barnes (husband, Patrick), Erin Guth (husband, Mitchell), Warren Ashley (wife, Haley), and Ryan Ashley (wife, Jessica); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 19, at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC, and will be conducted by the Rev. Don Carter. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation in the funeral home immediately following the service. A private entombment will be held in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, NC.
