Iva Compton Obituary

Iva Lee Vaughan Compton earned her heavenly wings on January 22, 2024, surrounded, and comforted by her family. She was born February 5,1937 in Pittsylvania County, which is near Gretna, Virginia. She was a daughter of the late Edna Dowdy Vaughan and Howard Franklin Vaughan. She was one of six children: siblings Anita, Stella, Connie, Martha, and David.

She graduated from Gretna High School in 1955 and later graduated from Nursing School in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1958. Soon after graduating from nursing school, she married the love of her life, James Philip on June 14, 1958. She started her nursing career in the western part of Virginia, Lynchburg and continued nursing the rest of her career in Norfolk, VA, giving her nursing career 40 years of total service and making Virgina Beach her home. She took extraordinary pride in her nursing career and served her community's patients with exceptional compassion and care.

She was the beloved wife to Phillip for 65 years. She is survived by her three children, Duane (Deanne), Darrell (Sandra) and David (Shelly) and six grandchildren, Jason, Victoria, Samantha, Jacob, Grace Anne and MaryMichael.

Iva was a lifelong, devout Christian highly active in all aspects of her church until she was unable to attend due to health issues. Iva loved to read, cook, and attend family gatherings, especially with her grandchildren. She loved to travel and was able to visit 49 of 50 states several times including all of Canada's providences.

She found solace in the mountains and was invigorated by a mountain sunrise. She loved cooking, camping and nature. Iva found the spring season to be her absolute favorite as it was a symbol of renewal. She loved the Easter season, spring flowers, and longer warmer days. Her favorite color was lavender seconded by baby blue, the color of her beautiful, bright eyes. Iva was small in stature, but mighty, headstrong (Scot Irish-Welsch), honest, straightforward, and loving. Iva absolutely adored her family. She will be missed beyond measure.
