James David Freeman
Virginia Beach - James David Freeman, 78, of Crystal Lake Drive, Virginia Beach died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family May 26, 2012 at Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital. The son of the late James Franklin Freeman and Sarah Mundy Freeman, he was also predeceased by his brother William Freeman.
Mr. Freeman was born in Phenix City, Alabama on August 24, 1933 and was a graduate of Maury High School and William and Mary College, where he was a member of TIGA fraternity. A United States Army veteran, Mr. Freeman was assigned to the 82nd Airborne and served as bodyguard to Gen. Alfred T. Grunther at SHAPE Headquarters in Paris, France.
Mr. Freeman was a prominent businessman in Virginia Beach, having owned Plaza Bakery since 1959. He loved golfing, hunting, fishing and the annual visits he and his wife made to England for many years. Mr. Freeman was a Mason, a member of the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club for over 40 years, the Norfolk Sports Club and the A.R.E.
Survivors include his wife Caroline House Freeman, Three sons, Thomas Michael Freeman and his wife Denise of Suffolk, Va., James David Freeman, Jr. and his wife Kim and their daughter Isabella Han Freeman of Wilmington, NC., and Peter Anderson Freeman of Virginia Beach. One sister, Patsy Freeman Cannon of Virginia Beach, and nephew William Cannon and his wife Tena and their children Liam, Josh, Sarah, and Memphis; grandchildren in law, Lorrie Gaskins and Bobby Shaffer and their children Melissa, Zach and John. He also leaves his treasured life long friend Whitey.
A memorial service for Mr. Freeman will be held at the Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church on Friday, June 1, at 3 p.m.
Donations may be made in honor of Mr. Freeman's memory to Operation Smile Charity at 6535 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509 or the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, 740 Virginia Beach Blvd. Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
The Freeman family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Sentara Va. Beach Hospital and to his doctors for the loving care given to Mr. Freeman and to the Bay Point Rehabilitation Center.

Caroline and Family,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of David. I always enjoyed being around him and loved all of his stories. I'm so glad he is at peace and he is no longer suffering.
