Joan Irene Monroe

1935 - 2023

Joan Irene Monroe, age 87, stepped into Glory on March 18, 2023.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by her three children: Kimberly Monroe, Gene Monroe, Jr., and John Monroe (wife Anita). She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Monroe, Sr.

Joan was born to John Newman, Sr. and Fannie Irene Newman on July 5, 1935 in Oakland, CA.

Joan loved Jesus first, then her husband, and then her family. Joan loved adventure, the beach, camping, and was an excellent swimmer.

Joan worked for Norfolk Christian Schools as a bus driver and Middle & Lower school secretary for 19 years. Her work also included much of her art talents doing bulletins and announcements for NCS and Tabernacle Church of Norfolk. Joan was an artist in all forms of drawing, painting, calligraphy, clay, ceramics, and design. She worked all those years at NCS to pay for the tuition of all 3 of her children.

There will be a viewing on Sunday, April 2nd at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA from 5PM until 7PM.

Hollomon-Brown will host a service the following day, April 3rd, at 10:30AM at the Tidewater Drive Chapel. Following the service there will be a graveside interment to be conducted at the Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery that will commence at 1:00PM. All family and friends are welcome to celebrate Joan's life with the family at either or both ceremonies.
