John W. Cramer

Chesapeake - John W. Cramer, 92, of Chesapeake, Virginia died in his home June 30th 2014 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on March 12th 1922 to John V. Cramer and Edna C. Cramer and lived a full, busy and active life. He had varied interests, was an avid reader and had a keen intellect with a passion for learning and teaching. During World War II he was a naval aviator and flight instructor in single and multiple engine training programs. After serving his country, he graduated from Penn State University on the GI Bill with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering. John then worked for General Electric for 20 years in Research & Development both at upstate New York and the Philadelphia Pennsylvania area on the beginnings of the space program and related missile guidance systems. After retirement from General Electric, he returned to the academic world attending William and Mary where he received a Certificate of Advanced Learning and was a professor at Tidewater Community College in Suffolk for 16 years heading the electronics program. After retirement he taught AARP Safe Driving for over 15 years and attended Covenant United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Underwood Appler Cramer, son John V. (Van) Cramer and daughter-in-law Carolyn C. Cramer, three grandchildren George Kahn (Holly) Renee Weston (Mark) and John William Cramer as well as nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving John is his sister Marjorie Guyer.

A private burial will be held at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Condolences may be made to the family online at www.sturtevantfuneralhome.com.

My heartfelt sorry to the family of Mr. Cramer. I am deeply sadden by the passing of my first college professor at TCC Suffolk, Va. He inspired me to go on and become an electrical engineer/college professor back in the late 80's. Be strong and know that he is with the Lord.
