John Galloway Obituary

John Romie Galloway, born in Norfolk, VA on February 13, 1942, died after a brief illness at his home in Gretna, LA, on Thursday, July 21, 2022, with his daughters and eldest grandson at his side. He is preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Geneva Frances McLawhorn of Norfolk, VA; his parents Romie Lee Galloway, Wilson, NC and Mary Elizabeth McLaughlin, Norfolk, VA, and lastly his younger brother Albert Owen Galloway of Virginia Beach, VA.

John is survived by two daughters; H. Romie Galloway- Newman (Christopher), Jaclyn Galloway Posecai (Scott); grandsons, Justin Andre (Elizabeth Hess), Adam Andre, Zachary Autin and great grandchildren Asher and Aspyn Autin; and his siblings, Paul A. Galloway (Susan), Robert E. Galloway (Jonathan Creamer), Michael E. Galloway (Kristen), Mary E. Murden, Rev. Marie E. Pogorelec (David), Rebecca M. Skeffington (Robert), and Jean A. Hopkins (Richard).

John attended Sacred Heart Elementary, Norfolk Catholic High School, and the Norfolk Division of William & Mary, now Old Dominion University. He excelled in his favorite sports of baseball and basketball. He was a Catholic HS basketball state champion, who shot a buzzer-beater from mid-court to win the Virginia State Catholic HS Basketball Tournament. In celebration, Norfolk Catholic granted a school-wide holiday. In 1960, John received the Norfolk Sports Club college basketball scholarship to attend and play basketball at William & Mary - Norfolk.

John served in the U.S. Air Force as a communications expert and was stationed at Alconbury RAF Airfield in Cambridgeshire, England. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Traveling Basketball team while in Europe. Upon returning to Norfolk, he met and married Geneva McLawhorn. His career began as a management intern for the S.S. Kresge Corporation (aka Kmart), which provided opportunities to live and work throughout the Southeastern U.S. He retired from Kmart after 35 years of service as a Manager and District Horticultural Coordinator.

He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Stonebridge Country Club where he was better known as the "Round Man" or just "Round". John was a bibliophile, sports enthusiast, skilled crossword player and music aficionado. He loved Jazz, the Blues, and many genres of music discovered in his extensive recorded collection.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. John Mizrahi and staff at Ochsner Health, Anne Favret, APRN, FNP-BC, ACHPN, and Hospice Associates of New Orleans for their kindness and care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Stonebridge Country Club in Gretna, LA, as he wished, on Friday, August 19th from 6-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in John's name to the Ochsner Cancer Institute Family Assistance Fund. I have so many fond memories of John and his wife and daughters. Playing tennis , pool, and darts with him at Epping Forest Club in Memphis. Visiting him in New Orleans, where he taught me how to eat crawfish and oysters. It was truly an honor to know and be a friend of "the Doctor", who was "iceless and priceless!"

I fondly remember working with John at the Kmart on Austin Peay highway in Bartlett, Tennessee.
He was kind of a free spirit and was a pleasure to work with.
I especially remember one night after we had just done a money audit after the store closing and getting into a wreck after leaving. I was driving and he was the passenger. We ran into the back of a car stopped on a main highway. We were so lucky that an off-duty policeman saw that the car did not have any lights on so, we got no ticket. Whew!
He was such a great guy and am sorry we lost touch.
