John Loizides Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend. John James Loizides, 80, passed on the morning of July 20th, 2021. He was born on January 17, 1941 in NYC to Jimmy and Polly Loizides, moving to Norfolk, VA at 6 months of age. John attended Garrison-Williams for primary school, Granby Elementary, Junior High, and High School - being a member of the historic "Lost Class of ‘59", passing the college entrance exam and going on to become an Alumni of William and Mary's South Campus (now ODU). John was preceded in death by his parents Jimmy and Polly Loizides and his cousins, Joan Redfern, Hope Mihalap, Dutchie Lott, Katsie Stamatis; and his cats Boots, Garfield, and Chris. John was an incredible and very talented photographer whose career began at the TV stations of WHRO & WVEC working the studio floor camera and progressing to working as a still photographer at WTAR (now WTKR) and CBN. After leaving CBN he went to work at Quality Camera doing photo restoration. John was also a talented woodworker - doing everything from house renovation to making toys for his daughter and was also a general all around handyman. John volunteered with Norfolk Little Theatre in the 1960s, which is where he met his wife Cleo Ann. Once his daughter Heather Ann was born, he volunteered at all her schools, taking photos at school events. When John was a still photographer, he photographed many famous people through the years. At WTAR on the Dick Lamb Show everyone from Mitzi Gaynor to Vincent Price and at CBN Pat Robertson, Fred Travalena (and his many faces), Maria von Trapp, and Mike Ditka among others. John loved to travel with his family - either to Nags Head, Williamsburg, and Myrtle Beach and always had his trusty camera with him so he could get the perfect photo. An avid fan of Peanuts since the beginning, he loved Charlie Brown and Snoopy best. He was raised in the Greek Orthodox Annunciation Church of Norfolk, VA and is a born-again Christian. John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cleo Ann; his daughter Heather Ann Cummings (Craig) of Hobart, IN; a grandson Cliffton Cummings of Hobart, IN; two brothers, Thomas Loizides (Teresa) of Norfolk, VA and Michael Loizides of Virginia Beach, VA; two nieces, Sabrina Loizides-Meredith (Earl) of Newport News, VA and Rebecca Loizides of Virginia Beach; 1 great niece Reina Elizabeth Meredith of Newport News, VA; and numerous other beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. in Norfolk, VA, is handling the arrangements. The visitation will be at their Norfolk chapel Monday July 26, 2021 from 5pm-8pm and the funeral will be held on Tuesday July 27, 2021 at 12 noon with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery to follow.

My family lived directly across from John, Ann, and Heather Ann for 10 years. I remember John's uncanny mechanical skills when working on automobiles. He was always painting and repairing his home as I was. John was readily available to assist me whenever I needed an extra pair of hands. I am saddened by his passing.

I had the pleasure of working with John in the marketing department at CBN during the '80s to mid '90s. I'm not sure which he enjoyed the best: being behind the camera or in the darkroom! John was one of the kindest people I've ever known and his Christ-like love for others was truly an example to follow. It was great to re-connect with John through Facebook. I especially enjoyed the history and perspective he provided on some of the Norfolk/Hampton Roads photos. John was truly a unique individual and he will be missed. My heart and prayers go out to all of you.

Deepest sympathies to your family. I was at WTAR in the 60's and knew John well. He was such a talented photographer and more than that, a real gentleman. I married Chuck Williams from WTAR-TV in the 60's and we moved to Williamsburg in the 80's. He died in 2015--almost 91 years of age. The world has lost a lovely man, and I know all of his associates will sorely miss him.

Ann, I was saddened to hear about John. I remember back in the late 1960's when he took my portfolio pictures when you and I both modeled with Charm Associates. He certainly became very well known and respected in the photography business. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Please accept my sincerest condolences. John and I
grew up on the same street in Norfolk, just a few doors apart. I am very sad to see of his passing.
