John Stouffer Obituary

John Willoughby Stouffer II passed peacefully on October 20th, 2022 at age 86. He had his family and a dear friend by his side. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Margie, daughter Marion, son John, their spouses Mark and Stacey, and grandchildren Jack, Millie, Willoughby and Leo.

He enjoyed an adventurous 30-year career in the US Navy where he retired as a Captain. He went on to get his CFP and become a financial planner for Ameriprise for his second 30-year career.

John was born and lived his early childhood in Pennsylvania, and then moved to Woodbury, New Jersey. His father became Superintendent of Schools and his mother was a kindergarten teacher and devoted homemaker. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating NROTC in 1957 when he began his Naval career.

John's stations for the Navy included two posts at the Pentagon; Norfolk, Virginia (where he retired); plus Vietnam; Oahu, HI; Newport, RI; Athens, Greece; Coronado, CA; and Jacksonville, FL. He also received his Masters in International Affairs through the Naval War College. He had the rare privilege of commanding three ships, which were his favorite posts and the pride of his Navy career.

Upon his Navy retirement John helped start one of the first independent franchises of financial planners for Ameriprise along with 3 wonderful partners. He thrived in financial planning and continued for another 30+ years! John cared for his clients and colleagues dearly.

John enjoyed an active passion for training and running Labrador Retrievers in AKC licensed field trials, a natural extension of his love of the outdoors and hunting. He owned and trained 29 dogs over the years. Along with his partners professional trainers Rick and Patty Roberts, he achieved his lifelong goal of qualifying for the National Field Trial with his dog Rush in 2009 - a career high point for him.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life which will likely be next spring.
