Joseph Hailes Sr.

Joseph C. Hailes Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Joseph C. Hailes Sr., 89, of the 2300 block of Cedar Road, entered into eternal rest Oct. 31, 2008, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 28 years of service. He later worked for Chesapeake Public Schools and Baynor Furniture Store. He spent most of his life providing plumbing services for local residents. Joseph spent nearly all of his life as a member and servant of New Light Baptist Church, Chesapeake. He spent his last years with long-standing community churches, Greater Bethel AME, Divine and Macedonia Baptist churches. Joseph is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia Lucille Cuffee Hailes of the home; one son, Donnie F. Hailes; one daughter, Hattie "Pene" Hailes-Chambers (John) of New York; one brother, James Hailes (Virginia); 11 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Joseph was predeceased by five of his seven children, Robert, Joseph Jr. (Claudette), Vernecial, Minnie and Jeanette. The only viewing opportunity will be today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Corprew Funeral Home. The family invites friends to share in a time of reflection today from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in New Light Baptist Church. The family will depart from the family home for services at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.
