Judith Brennan Obituary

On July 5, 2023, at her home in Virginia Beach, Va., Judith Marie Brennan closed her eyes for the last time.

Born March 14, 1947 in New Jersey, only daughter of Francis William Brennan and Betty Mae Kirkwood Brennan, Judi grew up and attended high school at West Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, New Jersey, where she excelled in academics and was a leading member of numerous student organizations.

After high school, Judi attended Duke University, where she majored in government and politics and earned a Fulbright scholarship her senior year. She briefly took time off from Duke University to teach in a private high school in New Jersey, where she discovered her passion for teaching, which eventually became her career.

Following Duke University, Judi taught Latin and government in Virginia Beach public high schools for over 30 years. She is well-remembered by many of her students, who kept in touch with her after they had graduated. Judi briefly took time away from teaching to attend law school, and earned a spot on the law review at William & Mary Law School before returning to the Virginia Beach school system. Although she excelled as a law student, by her own account her sojourn into the law made her realize how much she loved teaching.

Judi retired from the Virginia Beach public school system and, true to her nature, embarked upon a busy schedule of adult education, over a wide-ranging series of topics. She made many friends in the Virginia Beach and Norfolk adult education community, who remember her keen mind and quick wit.

Judi was a world traveler from an early age. She toured the entire continent of Europe as a college student, and later visited China, England, Canada and many other destinations around the world. She focused on areas of historical significance, and routinely had a thorough knowledge of the histories of the many places she traveled. She was an avid reader and an active bridge player for much of her life.

Mostly, Judi was a great, great friend, as her friends and family will attest. With contributions both large and small, she helped many of her friends overcome obstacles and difficulties in their lives, always with a smile and never expecting any favor in return.

Finally, she was a beloved family member. She leaves behind her brother Robert "Bob" Brennan and her niece and nephew, Alycia Marie Brennan and Stephen Francis Brennan. She is predeceased by her parents and also by her other brother, Francis Kirkwood Brennan. She always contributed to the success and joy of her family in numerous ways, and she will be missed by her many friends and family members who loved her.

There will be a memorial gathering for Judi on Friday, July 28 at 6 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, 4535 Commerce St., Virginia Beach, Va., in the Crescent Room. Judi's memorial will be non-denominational and all of her friends and colleagues are invited, and encouraged to speak a few words about Judi and how she touched the many lives around her. Condolences may be offered at www.vacremationsociety.com.

Oh my word! I just stumbled across this and could not believe it. Judy and I were next door neighbors in 1969/70 at Virginia Beach. We had many good times together, one very fun time was going to the Oyster Bowl Nov 15, 1969. She was a super gal back then and so glad to hear she had a wonderful career. When I left the Navy in 1970 we saw each other a couple of times and then time happened. Many times I have wondered about her. May she be at peace from the MS.

Judy was a long time neighbor. Dealing with her MS sometimes was hard for her so if she needed help with something she would call over to my house and either my husband, daughters or grandson would help her it. It could be something as little as taking in her mail or doing her trash cans. Helping with her TV, or cleaning in her kitchen or garage. Someone was always willing to help her. Many years ago she told my daughter , who was a high school senior at the time, about a scholarship she was in charge of . My daughter wrote the essay and submitted it, she was then granted a small scholarship to be used towards her college education. Judy will never be forgotten.

Judi and I were dorm mates at Duke, housemates in Virginis Beach when we first were teachers, and dear friends for decades. She was one if the brightest, most talented people I have ever known. MS was not kind to her, though she fought it for many years. I pray she is at peace. She will be missed but not forgotten.

Judi and I became friends when her family moved to West Caldwell, NJ. We were in 2nd grade. Friends though the years but not always in touch, some how are paths brought us back together. I met her in NY at the Manhattan Club on one of her trips north and we saw Godspell together. She came out to West Caldwell and we toured all the places she remembered and wanted to revisit. My husband, Tom and I met she and her friend, Jim in Falmouth on The Cape at her timeshare and spent a beautiful October day together. Phone calls now and then kept us in touch and they were always warm and so welcome. When my, granddaughter was born in 2010 she sent me some money to purchase a small tree for her and my brother, Jim's first granddaughter. They are planted at his farm property in Union Dale, PA. The 2 oaks are quite tall and strong now, a testament to the strength of the woman who gave the gift. They have also been joined by two other oaks for the other grandchildren who came along. I plan to see that one more tree is added to the others as a tribute to an amazing woman and friend. Love you, Judi.

Judi was a colleague, a supervisor, a mentor and a friend. I was privileged to work with her for many years in the VBPS. Her sense of humor and depth of knowledge were apparent in everything she did. She will be missed.

I wish the family of Ms. Brennan my condolences. I had the good fortune to be taught by her in 1976 while a senior at what is now Norfolk Collegiate School. She took our government class to Washington D. C. where we met with Justice Brennan, watched a Supreme Court session and later met our congressional representative. It inspired me to major in, and obtained a degree in, Politics and Government. I am now retired, but I owned and led a successful national public relations firm. Ms. Brennan lit the spark that started me on that path. Throughout my career I worked with politicians, governments, important causes and associations. Without her having taught me and exposing me to the way our system of government works, I question whether I would have even followed that career. I am very thankful for having crossed her path and for having her as a teacher. She will be remember by me and, I am sure, by many other of her students.
