Julia Ellen Mumma
Chesapeake - Julia Ellen Mumma, age 62, of Parkesburg formerly of Chesapeake, VA passed away on December 12, 2011, at the Essa Flory Hospice Center with loving friends and family in attendance. Julia died after living valiantly with cancer for over 7 years. She was the daughter of Raymond K. & Loretta Jane Lehman Stoltzfus of Parkesburg. Julia graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School class of 1967, from Eastern Mennonite College in 1971 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and later earned a Master's Degree from Old Dominion University. Julia loved nursing, and had always wanted to be a nurse. She loved her career and was very caring and good at her work. Julia worked at Lancaster General Hospital through her illness because she loved her work, and reluctantly retired a year ago when she became too ill to work. Julia also loved music, played the piano, and sang in choirs in high school, college and church. Julia was loved by and was devoted to her family. When her children were growing up, every few weeks she would cook a meal from a different culture and talk about the geography, history and culture during the meal. She was active in her children's school and church, and helped to establish a Young Youth program at Mount Pleasant Mennonite Church, Chesapeake, VA. Julia also loved to sew and to work with crafts and to decorate her home for the seasons. Julia was an adventurous person who loved to travel and learn about the history and culture of other regions. In her mid-fifties, she spent several years in the Czech Republic teaching English and traveling, and thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. She lived life fully right up to the end. Her last trip was to spend a long Thanksgiving week with her son and daughter in Nashville. Up until several days before she died, she was planning her next weekend trip! Julia's zest for life, devotion to family and friends, and her feisty spirit kept her going and is an inspiration to the grieving friends and family she leaves behind. She is survived by two children: Amanda Jane (Mumma) Flatt, Andrew Mumma, siblings: Kenneth Stoltzfus, Raymond Stoltzfus, Lorraine Stoltzfus, Nolan Stoltzfus, Nelson Stoltzfus, Willard Stoltzfus, Mark Stoltzfus, Nancy Fleming, and many good friends who loved her deeply. She was preceded in death by a brother Ernest Stoltzfus. A memorial service will take place at the Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church, 2041 Mt. Pleasant Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322 on Friday, December 16, at 1:00 p.m. with interment in the adjoining church cemetery. Family will greet friends following the interment. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604. Arrangements by the Shivery Funeral Home, Inc., Christiana & Paradise.
