Kenneth Mills Obituary

Kenneth Dane Mills

Virginia Beach -

K. Dane Mills, 69, died unexpectedly in his sleep Feb. 5, 2017 at his home in Virginia Beach.

Dane was a man of integrity, faith, generosity, humor, service and kindness. After briefly serving as a US Naval Officer, he practiced law for 40 years, but dedicated most of his energy to church and community. He served through Princess Anne Rotary Club (past president), Heart Havens, Cox High School '65 Reunions, Tidewater Emmaus, Alzheimer's Association, Virginia Wesleyan and the Scout Show. A pillar of Thalia United Methodist Church, he held multiple leadership roles there, and in the Norfolk District and Virginia United Methodist Conference. His men's bible study changed lives, including his own.

His deepest love-even more than his alma mater UVA and the Red Sox-remained his family. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 47 years, Patricia (Halstead), his sister Bonnie Mills, his daughters Jennifer Mills-Knutsen (Joshua) and Lauren Grzymalski (Ken), and three grandchildren, Sadie, Benjamin and Charlotte. His beloved parents, Ken and Ruth, and his sister, Carol Ann Temple, awaited him in Heaven.

The family welcomes visitors Friday, Feb. 10 from 5-7 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel at 3600 Virginia Beach Blvd. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Thalia United Methodist Church, reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to his memory can be made to Thalia United Methodist Church. Condolences may be offered to the family at: www.hollomon-brown.com

As I sit here and think about Dane's passing three years ago, I am struck by how quickly time passes. Each day is a gift from the Lord and it is something many take for granted. I'm sure Pat wishes she had one more day with the man she loved almost her entire life. Dane is a person I will never forget. His kindness, generosity and genuine care for his fellow man were qualities that touch my own life. I miss him and I know you do too Pat. We will see Dane again in our heavenly home.

To Pat and the entire family:

Dane was the type of lawyer who was an example to the entire legal community. He fought for his client but was a gentleman through the entire process. He knew the law and knew the practicalities of the court system which allowed him to always give the best advice to his clients. I will miss him as a mentor. But his legacy as a professional will live on.

I liked Dane the moment we were introduced. I too am a small town lawyer for the last 40 years in Jeffersonville, Indiana. I was privileged to know his daughter Jennifer as my pastor for almost 10 years. Dane and Pat visited a number of times and I was always glad to see them. We understood so many things the same way and our values were very similar. Our problems of a small practice were also similar. I promised him that I would look out for his daughter, Jennifer and always help her when I could. I tried to keep that promise, but better yet, Jennifer always looked out for me. I feel like I have lost a buddy. God bless this wonderful family.

To Pat and the entire family,
I am deeply grieved by Dane's unexpected passing but at the same time am comforted by the fact he walked right into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We, who believe, will see him again some day. Dane was a great friend to me since high school and I will miss him. God bless you all.
