Lewis Huddle Sr.

Lewis A. Huddle Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Lewis Alfred Huddle Sr., 96, peacefully departed this world, Friday, Nov. 27, 2009. Born in Rural Retreat, Va., he was the youngest son of the late John Lewis Huddle and Ollie Tilson Huddle. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Mary Jewell Huddle; a brother, Harmon Huddle; two sisters, Deonne Huddle and Jessie Huddle. He was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church and a former member of First Lutheran Church, both in Portsmouth. Lewis grew up on a farm in Southwest Virginia and joined the Marine Corps at age 19. He retired after 30 years achieving the rank of first lieutenant and was a veteran of World War II, having served at Pearl Harbor and in the Korean conflict. After retiring, he attended the Norfolk division of The College of William & Mary. He was later employed as security for Virginia Chemicals. Survivors include a daughter, Malia L. Huddle of Chesapeake; two sons, Lewis A. Huddle Jr. and wife Kristin of Little Rock, Ark., and David L. Huddle of Portsmouth. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Christopher Huddle, Heather Foxwell and husband Adam, Andrew Huddle and wife Heather and Adam Piper; four great-grandchildren, Justin Foxwell, Summer Huddle, Dawn Huddle and Rachel Huddle; as well as a loving niece, Jane Pilson of Ridgeway, Va. A memorial service with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 29, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Dennis Buchholz will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. A private burial will be held at a later date in the family cemetery at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rural Retreat, Va. The family would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the staffs of Allzwell and Sentara Oak Grove as well as the sixth floor staff and ER staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. The family would also like to thank Mr. James Short, Mr. Dominic Lascara, Karen and Juanita for their support throughout the last year and a half.
