Maltire O'Neal Obituary

Maltire "Mal" Nick O'Neal, Jr, 75, died on Friday, December 4, 2020 of a massive heart attack, doing what he loved, playing golf. After teeing off on the second hole of Virginia Beach National, God called him home. Born in Suffolk, Mal attended Maury High School in Norfolk. After graduation, Mal married his high school sweetheart, Nancy (Long) O'Neal, his wife of 54 years. Mal was very social with an outgoing personality, leading to a career in sales spanning over 50 years. He lived life like a sales line, "But wait, there's more!" all the while raising a family in Virginia Beach. Stories can be told of his holes-in-one, yes more than one, of the memories made on family vacations, of bowling leagues, softball games, card night, sudoku puzzles, shag dancing and singing in the church choir. Where there is humor, compassion, integrity, fellowship and family, you will find a story to tell of him. Mal's real legacy, aside from all the stories and antics, are those he is leaving behind; Wife, and best friend, Nancy; daughter Jennifer Goff and her husband Jed of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; son Maltire Nick O'Neal, III and his wife Jen of Haddam, CT; four grandchildren Molly, Evan, Reed and Ryder; his brother Don O'Neal and his wife Cary of Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hope Lutheran Church Building Fund. A service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, Virginia Beach on Wednesday, December 9, at 11am. Nancy and family,

So very, very sorry to hear of Mal's passing but grateful he was doing what he loved to do - golfing. It's been a while since I've seen all of you since I moved away in 2010 but doesn't mean that I haven't thought of you so much and remember all the good times we had together. I'll always remember Mal singing at our functions and what a great voice he had. Pete and I loved both of you so much and enjoyed all our times together. May our Heavenly Father help you through this crucial time. We never get over losing our loved ones, especially our husbands, but hopefully time will heal. My love to all of you.

Nancy, don't where to start with sympathy or remembrance of a man who brought me many fun moments. I knew Mal a long time but it doesn't seem that long ago we and the boys we"re down on some adventure down in Myrtle Beach. He sure made us laugh and was a treat to be around. You guys were sure good friends to us when we were at Virginia Beach , all the times we spent together including the Beach Bashes and other events. But in giving my and Christine's sympathy and well wishes ,nothing will replace Mal but at least we know he's in a better place now and waiting for you. God's love was shone through Mal.s personality everyday and I'm sure that he's sharing that with God everyday. Hope you're going to fine and that this is just a pit-stop along the way. I'll call in a few days when everything is more settled .
God be with you and yours

Vince Olivari sent us the information about Mal’s death. What a shock! We were just talking about you and Carolyn the other day and wondering where y’all were. I, now wonder if it was the day Mal passed away? Mental Telepathy? Scary, huh? What a beautiful obituary and tribute to a wonderful and full life. Our heartfelt sympathy to you and the family. We now live in Winston Salem, NC as of May. We had been in New Bern for 20 years and Fairfax, Va for the previous 15.
After things settle, we would love to hear from you. Our address is 5050 Salemtowne Drive, #374, Winston Salem, NC 27106 and my cell # is 252-229-2499. Please remember us to all the Jaycees of our “time”.
Again Nancy, we can only imagine what this is like for you. Our love and thoughts are with you.
