Mary Centko Obituary

Mary J. Centko, 98, of Chesapeake, VA passed away quietly in her sleep on April 24, 2022 at her home. She was born October 31, 1923 in Springfield, IL, the daughter of Martin Kodrich and Jane Josephine Ivory. She was the wife of the late John Henry Centko and mother of two sons who preceded her in death, John Martin Centko and David Christopher Centko, and three daughters who survive her, Mary Jeannette Centko, Michele Yvonne Carr and Dianne Christine Turner. She is the loving grandmother of ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mary was a powerful example of the Greatest Generation. She was forged with immigrant strength from her parents and fortified by the Great Depression and WWII. She rose to every occasion, using her bottomless energy and drive to help those around her. She served family, neighbors and her community in many capacities over the years. She adored her years in retail at Roses and the opportunities to make not just new customers, but new friends. She always had the desire to do something for someone, and she never met a stranger. Her zest for life, love of music, and passion for people and animals alike made her unforgettable. Mary was a force of nature, and she will truly be missed.
