Mary DeChabert Obituary

Mary G. DeChabert PORTSMOUTH - Mary G. DeChabert answered God's call Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Sentara Nursing Center. Born May 12, 1930, in Farmville, Va., she was the second child of Booker and Annie Bell Ward Goode. She was a retired English teacher from Portsmouth Public Schools. She had also retired from New York City Schools. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Juan, whom she lovingly called "Johnnie." Mary was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Temple where she served faithfully. Mary belonged to the Flower Ministry and took the lead in planting and tending the flowers. A member of the Missionary and Drama Ministries, she was assistant drama director, a position of teamwork she enjoyed and cherished. A team leader in her community and profession, she joined professional organizations in New York and Virginia and was a lifetime member of Gamma Delta Omega Chapter of AKA Sorority Inc. Mrs. Mary G. DeChabert, affectionately called "Mrs. D," was loved and highly respected by her friends and colleagues. She is survived by her brother, William Goode Sr. of Portsmouth; two nephews, William Goode Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Steve Goode (Yayoi), their son Kazuki of Brighton, Mass.; two nieces, Lila Goode of Richmond and Barbara Goode of Suffolk; great-nephew, Keith Goode (Lakeisha) and their sons; a dear friend and sister-in-Christ, Deacon Evelyn D. Sawyer of Portsmouth; and a host of cousins, caretakers, neighbors and friends. An AKA Sorority Inc. memorial service will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Corprew Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hermon Baptist Temple, 2901 London Blvd., Portsmouth.

To the family of Mrs. DeChabert
I wish to express my sincere condolences in the loss of your loved one. It was my extreme pleasure to meet and interact with Mrs. DeChabert, and I am a better person for having known her. Her strength of character and determination served as an inspiration to me, and I shall never forget her ability to find humor even in the times of adversity. I too will miss her.
