Naomi Ayers Obituary


Laverne Ayers SUFFOLK - Naomi Laverne Ayers, 85, of the 200 block of Spirit Circle East, died Nov. 27, 2008 in Suffolk. A native of Bellevue, Ky., she was the wife of Paul Ayers. She retired as a secretary to Dr. Harry D. Cox. Laverne was a member of New Creation United Methodist Church (at the Aldersgate Campus), past president of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, past president of XYZ (Extra Years Zest), member of the official board and kitchen committee, all of the church. She was a life member of the PTA and a volunteer at Maryview Hospital. She served in the Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C., at the Naval Supply Center in Hawaii and the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, Cincinnati. Other survivors include three daughters, Pamela L. Ayers of Sterling, Va., Deborah A. Koller and husband Kent of Richmond and Patricia A. VanHassel and husband John of Westerville, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Painter of California, Ky.; a brother, George H. Shotwell of Nashville, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren, Dan, Joe and Laura VanHassel, Scott and Robert Koller and Shawn and Ryan Eastridge. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in New Creation United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Drinkard and the Rev. Robert Cofield. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com
