Nell Gates Obituary
Norfolk - Nell Lance Gates passed away on April 21, 2013. Born in Portsmouth, VA on October 11, 1912, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Lance. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ewart Gladstone Gates, a Norfolk oral surgeon for 60 years.
Mrs. Gates was retired from the Gates Theatrical Company which originated in England in the 1890's. She was a former member and volunteer of the Hermitage Museum auxiliary, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, Women's Club of Norfolk, Norfolk Garden Club, past president of the Norfolk Society of Arts, and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
She and her husband were faithful communicants of the Church of Good Shepherd for over 60 years. She served on the altar guild, children's choir and other committees in the church.
Mrs. Gates is survived by her daughter, Annamelia Gates Smith and her husband Dr. Roger J. Smith; her grandson Dr. C. Michael Smith and his wife Deborah Smith; and a great grandson Andrew Patrick Smith.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 26, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with Rev. Robert Davenport officiating. Remembrance gifts may be made to the Church of Good Shepherd .
H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling the funeral arrangements.

We are saddened to hear of Nell's passing and you all are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. She lived a long and wonderful life. Living to be 100 years old is amazing! We knew Nell for over 30 of those years and always thought her to be a very intelligent, independent and kind lady. With deepest sympathy,

A friend in Norfolk told me about your Mother's death. Nell was my Mother's dearest friend and I always enjoyed Nell's company when I was down visiting Mother. My Mother was Roy Blake and she's been dead about 10 years now. I kept in touch with Nell for years but hadn't heard from her in the past few and wasn't sure where she was. Nell and Mother's friendship was a beautiful thing. Your Mother was kind and full of life. Please accept my sympathy. Claiborne Winborne
