Nida Newman Obituary

Nida S. Newman NORFOLK - Nida Vae Smith Newman has gone to be with her brothers and sisters. She was 88. She was born in Riverton, W.Va., June 26, 1920. Nida died at the home of her daughter, Sherry Newman Ramsey after a struggle with cancer. She lived with all of her children in her last years and liked to say, "When one of them gets tired of me I go to another." She loved family and saw each member as a part of her legacy. She grew up in West Virginia but moved to Virginia upon graduating from high school. She worked for several years before eventually meeting her future husband, John Wesley Newman. They were married on Christmas Eve 1944 while he was serving in the U.S. Army. They settled in St. Michaels, Md., where his family lived. They both loved the crooks and necks of the Chesapeake Bay and spent many leisurely hours on the water. They moved to Virginia and lived the rest of their married life there until his passing in 1962. She raised five children by her great strength and hard work, never failing to provide for all their needs as well as their wants. She is survived by her children, Dr. Joe Ann Newman-Gibbs of Windermere, Fla., Sherry Ramsey of Norfolk, Lucy Hall of Charlotte, N.C., John Newman of Bristow, Va., and James Newman of Norfolk. She loved and doted on her nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., next to her husband. The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Norfolk Seventh-day Adventist Church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. There will be a viewing Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Condolences may be made at www.hdoliver.com.

It doesn't seem real that you are gone. We will all miss you. Now we will always have a void in our lives. My grandsons couldn't get up and talk about you in public, but they talked to me about you. I am so glad you lived 3 houses away from them in Charlotte for a few years. Those times are very special to them. Rosemary always had a special bond with you..I know she will miss you and miss your unconditional love for her. Family love and love for babies will always be a part of my life... that was one of your gifts to me that we share. We loved, laughed and cried as a family and that will go on......

Nanny! Thank you for being such a great influence in my life! I love you more than you could even know and I will miss you! I have such wonderful memories with you like Nanny Camp, taking care of us while at SVA, coming and visiting and going to the PX. I know my boys loved reading to you and always loved to visit you. And lifesavers will always be an extra special treat to them because of you. I am so thankful that God allowed you to meet Harley before you passed! I love you Nanny!
