Ramona Mapp Obituary

Ramona Hartley Mapp SUFFOLK - Dr. Ramona Hartley Mapp, formerly of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2011, in a Suffolk hospital. A native of Headland, Ala., she had lived in the Hampton Roads area since 1962, and lived in the Churchland area of Portsmouth from 1971 until she moved to Lake Prince Woods retirement community in 2009. Dr. Mapp had a diverse education. She attended public schools in Alabama and Florida and began her college education at the University of London, England. She also attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., and Indiana University. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Old Dominion University, where she taught English for several years and helped found the Delta Sigma Lambda sorority. She earned a doctorate in education from Virginia Tech. She inspired students and faculty at Tidewater Community College's Portsmouth campus from 1971 to 1995, serving as professor of English, English Department chair, and chair of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Mapp was active in numerous educational, civic, cultural, political and church organizations. She was president of the South Atlantic Association of Departments of English, of the Tidewater Child Care Center, of young Audiences of Virginia, and of the Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library. She was named an Outstanding Tidewater Professional Women, received a Friend of the Arts Award, and was listed in Who's Who Among American Women. Ramona was a lovely lady with a fantastic sense of fun, she was too young to grow old so she didn't. An inspiration to all that knew and loved her. Blair Grant and family

As a teenager in the seventies I knew Mrs. Mapp as one of the most friendly, kind and genuinely interested moms I'd ever met--a rare sweet memory from high school. And now, having recently lost both my own mom in Richmond and my mum-in-law in New Zealand, I do empathize with the family and extend my deep sympathy in experiencing such profound loss.

Hi I am sorry for your loss. I met her by being one of her caregivers. I only knew her for a short time about 3 months but in that time I got to know a great generous lady. We always joked about going to Paris and I guess I have to go now with an angel watching over me. Take care. Cheri Lane

Our community has lost a wonderful woman who for a half century contributed to the fabric of our society in higher education, scholarship, historical research, and culture. We all will miss her keen intellect and her caring about Hampton Roads as a special project

While the sadness now is overwhelming, the Mapps have been fortunate to share this beautiful woman for so long. To have such star power hold the light and brighten life’s pathways for you has been a great privilege.

She will be remembered for the wonder and delight she brought to her students, family and friends, for her energy and great ability to organize, her wit and good humor, insight and empathy. Many loved her. Many miss her. You and your family have my deepest personal sympathy.

I was so sad to hear of Ramona Mapp's death. She was a good friend and colleague and offered great support when Ethelyn Morgan, Alice Hedrick and I co-authored The Handbook of Basic Writing Skills, which survived five editions. I will always remember her encouragement and friendship.

Dear Dr Alf J Mapp Jr,
I took your English Comp class in 1970 and one night Dr Ramona Hamby pinch-hit for you. I immensely enjoyed you both as teachers, and persons. I am so glad you found each other and had so many years together, with so much in common! I last met you at Maryview ER, where I was a nurse, sometime in the late 1990s, I think, but was fortunate to have both of you delightful folks cross my path in life. My sympathy is surely with you in her loss, and wishing you peace. Linda Whitt RN

I always enjoyed speaking with her and she wa so appreciative of the little things I'd do. I especially enjoyed one Saturday when my mother and I were invited over to gather IRIS bulbs from her back yard. She was thinning out her flower bed and offered me as many as I could take home. Wesat in the backyard and enjoyed the view and whenever the Iris are in bloom, I'll think of Ramona.
