Richard Olivieri Obituary

Richard E. Olivieri, Sr.

Va Beach - Richard Olivieri, 77, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2017, surrounded by the embrace of his loving family in the comfort of his own home. Beloved father, husband, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, Richard will be greatly missed by all who experienced his love, guidance, charity, and wisdom.

Left to cherish his memory and warm spirit are his loving wife Maureen, sons Richard (Jennifer), Chris, John (Katherine), and Michael (Chelsea), daughter Rosemary(Peter), and grandchildren Ethan, Anna, Cora, Grace, Mason, Archer, and Cameron Olivieri, all of Virginia Beach, and his sister and brother-in-law Pat and Peter Racanello, and brother Robert, all of Florida.

Richard was born on September 20, 1940, to Emil and Clara Olivieri in Jamaica, NY. He was a graduate of La Salle Military Academy and Manhattan College. He married the love of his life Maureen on June 6, 1963, and soon moved south to the new city of Virginia Beach, VA, to start his family and career.

Over the next half century he used the compassion and discipline instilled in him by the Christian Brothers at La Salle, and his father's business savvy and passion to build thousands of homes for Virginia families and businesses. As a home builder and real estate developer, his company Pembroke Commercial Realty found success alongside the explosive growth of this new city, Virginia Beach, which he loved so much. His company developed many projects, including Pembroke Mall, Aragona Village, Pembroke Manor, and Timberlake.

Richard was an active and dedicated member of his church, Star of the Sea, the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, a founding member of the Bayville Golf Club, and a Director Emeritus of the Tidewater Builders Association. He was extremely generous, helping all those in need that he could, especially Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, and the United Way.

Richard was known for his wisdom, compassion, sense of humor, and generosity. And his love of golf a lifelong avid golfer, the joy and relaxation golf brought him (and those lucky enough to experience a round or two with him) was only surpassed by his love of spending time with family and friends. He leaves behind countless memories of good times, especially his seat at the head of the table at all those famous Olivieri family dinners with chairs and extra tables stretching out of the dining room and kitchen into the rest of the house.

The family wishes to thank Richard's physicians, Doctors Gregory Warth, Steven Warden, Mark Fleming, and Scott Williams, for their kind and compassionate care.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 18th from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel with a Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Esteban DeLeon at 12 p.m. Tuesday, December 19th at Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Memorial donations can be made to United Way of South Hampton Roads, Toqueville Society, 2515 Walmer Ave, Norfolk, VA 23513, CHKD Child Abuse Program, 935 Redgate Ave, Norfolk, VA 23507, or Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1404 Pacific Ave, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Maureen,
You have my deepest sympathy and I pray God will give the strength to continue with your life. Both of us lost our loved ones this year and I will pray for Richard and Johon since they are spending Christmas in Heaven and they are sending us the following prayer.
"My First Christmas in Heaven"
I see countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny lights like Heaven's stars, reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I worked with Richard Olivier for 17 years beginning in 1978. I always respected him and as mentioned by others, he always made sure his employees knew they were an important part of Pembroke Commercial Realty and that he cared about them. I learned a lot from him. My deepest sympathy to his family and my prayers are with all of you. I am glad I had the pleasure of knowing him. God Bless!

I met Mr. Olivieri in the early eighties at various Political Dinners. He seemed to always be with his wife to which admired. As I got to see him a lot more when I entered the building material business there he was again it seemed always with his wife. Gosh, he was such a consistent & great man all the way through! May the next generation of leaders learn from you on how to conduct business and be such a great family man. Darwin J. "Jimmy" Rogers

Richard was one of the great business leaders of Hampton Roads. Much of the success of Virginia Beach can be traced to the vision of Richard and his partner Fred Napolitano. I know he will be greatly missed by the Oliveri and Napolitano families. I was very sorry to learn of his passing.

I was so sorry to be told of Mr. Olivieri's passing. I was the first he saw most mornings, since I've been at the front desk of his office almost 22 years, and he always had that smile with his good morning and comments on the weather. I will truly miss him passing through that door. To all his family may each day bring you a smile as you remember this kind, good man.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
