Richard Payne Obituary
Virginia Beach - Richard Ernest Payne, Jr, 51, passed away on August 24, 2012 in a local hospital. He was born in Fairfax, Va. and lived in the Virginia Beach area for the past 30 years. Rick began his career as a builder framing houses in Houston, Texas before moving to Virginia Beach, where he founded Beach Structures and was a partner in the Futura Group. Most recently, he was the owner of Crawl Space Systems and Green Star Coatings.
Rick's adventures included surfing at the oceanfront, sailing in the Caribbean, boating in the Chesapeake Bay, jumping out of planes over Sandbridge, and traveling the world from Tokyo to Budapest. He was happiest together with his family and, not least, his dogs, or any animal that crossed his path.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Onofrio Payne, two sons, Richard Payne of New York, N.Y. and Alexander Payne of Virginia Beach, Va., two step-daughters, Sophia and Isabella Kelly of Virginia Beach, Va., his mother, Sugar Hare of Seattle, Wash., his father, Richard Payne, Sr. of Tequesta, Fla., a sister, Kelly Payne Brown of Beverly Hills, Calif., a brother, Michael Hare of Portland, Ore., and three grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas and Maria of Uppsala, Sweden.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday August 27, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club following the service for a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA. I just learned tonight about Rick's passing. I am so sorry I missed the visitation so I could see you all. I am totally shocked and cannot imagine how painful this is for you all. Living next door to you was such a joy watching him outdoors with the children. Rick was a loving husband and father, and example to us all. Please know how deeply sorry Tom and I are and you will be in our prayers. All our love to you.

Though it has been more than 35 years since we spent any significant time together,I will always cherish my time with my step-brother, Rickey. Ours was a complex and complicated family, but we managed to have fun when we were together. While I have lost touch with Rickey as an adult, I am happy to know that he lived his life with as much passion as I knew of him as a teenager.
As your family is grieving your loss, your sacrifice has given new life to those in need. Your passion will now live in others.

Rick was a great person and father. He touched everyone he met. Our family will truly and deeply miss him and our hearts and prayers are with his wonderful children, Sofia,Bella and Alexander and their wonderful mother, Maria. We love you all.
