Robert Powell Obituary

Robert George Powell, 66, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at his home. Born in Philadelphia. PA, during Hurricane Hazel, and was the son of the late Mary Gable Powell and James Leonard Powell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Theresa Irene, and his brothers, Bruce Earl and Leonard Charles.

Attended Philadelphia public schools for first ten years. Attended public school in Chester County PA for next five years. Transferred to Clifton Heights PA High School where I met the love of my life, Michelle, with whom I spent the last fifty-one years of my life.

Attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and several schools thereafter, including Old Dominion University.

Began career in the maritime industry with McAllister Brothers in Philadelphia.

Moved to Norfolk with family in 1983 to work for Allied Marine. Started my own business in 1985 selling ships' fuel. Entered into partnership with good friend Matt Lipkin in 1995 with whom I shared virtually every business venture, including tug and barge transportation, contract fuels with the government, electrical contracting and real estate.

I was Noble Grand in the Independent Order of Oddfellows Washington Lodge No. 2 and was part of the organization since 1992. I was also a member of the Knights of Pythias Beach Lodge #169 for a number of years.

I enjoyed traveling in my earlier years, particularly golf trips. I've been a member of Cypress Point, Elizabeth Manor and Broad Bay. I've had the pleasure of meeting great golfers and great people, particularly those in my Oddfellows and Stonehouse golf groups.

I am survived by my brothers, John Arnold and Thomas James; my wife, Michelle Antonio; son, Bradford Edmund and his wife, Rebekah; and two grandsons, Tyberius and Mackoy; daughter, Samantha Ann and her husband, Daniel McLaughlin.

I did not desire a memorial service, but, my family will hold a celebration of my life which will be announced at a later date. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk is handling arrangements. To send online condolence notes to the family and for future details go to www.hdoliver.com.

Ann and I send our deepest sympathy to all of Bob's loved ones. Bob was a treasured friend and will be remembered with a smile. When I think of Bob I think of a good and decent human being with a razor-sharp intellect, a man always ready to offer an encouraging word. He will be missed by many.

Those of us who had the pleasure of calling Bob friend will never forget his smarts, his generosity, his compassion for others, his wonderful story telling and sense of humor and of course his putting from just about anywhere on the golf course. How did he do that! You will be desperately missed by so many my brother. My deepest sympathies to Michelle and the family. RIP Bobby. Yours was a life well lived my friend.
