Ruby Carson Obituary

Ruby May Carson, 103, died February 22, 2020, at home in Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach. She was born Nov. 13, 1916, in Norfolk, VA to parents, Oscar and Agnes Johnson. After graduating in 1934 from Maury High School in Norfolk, Ruby had a long professional career working as a business woman starting at the Norfolk Naval Base; then for many years at the C. Lloyd Johnson Company and finally for the Department of the Navy.

In May 1943, she married Donald Hewett Carson. They enjoyed 57 joyful years together raising a son, becoming grandparents, traveling, dancing, playing cards, entertaining friends and attending church. They were charter members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Norfolk and also members of Monumental United Methodist Church in Portsmouth.

Upon her husband's death in 2001, Ruby moved to Westminster Canterbury. She joined Baylake United Methodist Church and loved being with her Sunday School Group. Ruby continued to lead an active life participating in many activities at WC from taking bus trips with friends, playing bridge (LOTS of bridge), tap dancing and singing in The Follies, participating in Thai Chi and "95 Alive". During this time, she also became Nana to eight beautiful Great-Grandchildren!

To all of her family and friends, Ruby leaves lasting memories of her positive attitude, radiant smile, sense of humor and deep faith in prayer.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings, Blonnie, Jay and Rosalie. She is survived by her son, Don Carson, Jr. (Peggy) of Greenfield, IN; grandchildren, Grier (Stephanie) Carson of Bloomington, IN, Glen (Miranda) Carson of Fishers, IN, Holly (Darrin) McClure of Indianapolis, IN, Jennifer Fix of Chicago, IL, and Tommy (Grace) Fix of Norwood, OH; great-grandchildren, Sayla, Coltie Ruby, Reese, Ella, Emerson, Oliver, Mirabel and Remy; her nephew, Milton (Bettie) Baum of Swoope, VA; great-nephews, Jim (Janice) Baum of Midlothian, VA and Jeff (Stephanie) Baum of Sugar Hill, GA; and a great-niece and her husband, Leslie and Raymond Robey of WC who provided extra special loving care to Great Aunt Ruby in her final years.

A private burial service will be held for the family. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, at The Holy Trinity Chapel at WC. Following the memorial service, Ruby's family will greet friends in the WC Anderson Bayview Room at WC. Arrangements are by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel.

Ruby's family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to her "W.C. Family" including friends, staff and caregivers for all of the wonderful years.

Miss Ruby lived across from my parents at WC for many years. She was always the most vivacious presence on the floor! Ready with a smile and a compliment, quick to engage in conversation, a party onto herself. When my parents moved to another area in WC, we were happy to meet Don and Peggy, although we missed seeing Ruby as often. Later when we met in the Overlook, Ruby would always greet us warmly. A wonderful lady who brought sunshine into all our lives, and will be deeply missed. George and Doreen Neil
