Sally King Obituary

Died peacefully at the age of 89 on March 29, 2021 in Virginia Beach at her home. Sally was born on November 15, 1931 in Asheville, NC, the oldest of 3 children to her parents, Harley Gaston Buckner, and May Matilda Davall Buckner. Sally graduated from West Buckham County High School in 1950 and went on to teacher's college for a year. After going to Virginia Beach to help a cousin care for her children over the summer, Sally received a scholarship to Norfolk General Hospital Nursing School. During this time in Virginia Beach, she met the love of her life, Cassius King. After a year of courtship, they were married in Asheville, NC. They then moved to Virginia Beach to help Cash's parents run Flowers by King's florist shop on Virginia Beach Boulevard. In 1971 they became part owners with Cash's sister. Over the years, daughters Cynthia Laufer and Cathryn Moran helped run the florist shop. The family also owned land in Chesapeake where they lived for 32 years, and operated greenhouses as K B Plant Farm. They were well known in the florist community with decades of service. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Cassius Marcellus King; her father, Harley Gaston Buckner; her mother May Matilda Davall Buckner; her brother, Harley Mitchel Buckner; and her son-in-law, James Laufer. Left to cherish her memories is her sister Joy Bright (Tom); daughters, Cynthia Laufer and Cathryn Moran (Tim); grandchildren, Timothy Moran (Jenne), Thomas Moran (Michelle), Paul Laufer (Autumn) and Abby Paul (Andrew); great grandchildren, Chancellor, Elizabeth, Mia, Lillian and Cassius; sister-in-law, Aileen Buckner; daughter in heart, Sheri Lewis (Paul); and other family and friends. Memorial services will be held on April 8th at 2:00 pm at Freedom Baptist Church, 308 Centerville Turnpike N., Chesapeake, VA, 23320; and on April 9th at 1:00 pm at Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA. 23462 with inurnment of Mrs. King in the church's columbarium. Cathy, your mother was so special! She was always so very kind to me. Loved ceramics at the florist. Always knew any flowers I sent would be perfect!
It's been a long time but remember you all so fondly. Love you!

Cindy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of Sally sitting next to her at church, and in the earlier days when we had YOA activities at your house or the church, Sally was often there. I always enjoyed our conversations. I gravitated to her spirit and her beautiful smile. Rest in PEACE, Sally.

I grew up eating many dinners at Mrs. Kings (nano) home. I will forever remember her warm smile and kind heart. She will always be a very special person to me. I'm sending all the love and prayers to the family.

Cindy and family, I was so sorry to see your mom passed away. Her and you dad were always so kind. I know you all will miss her. I always think of the plant farm and the joy it brought me. You and Jim taught us a lot about plants. Shannon and I always talk about the plant farm and how we miss it. Love and sympathy.

I knew Mrs. King, her husband, and immediate family for almost 20 years. She was a kind, sweet lady who always loved others. My memory is ironclad, and not once did she pass me without engaging in some form of conversation. When Mrs. king talked she’d peer directly into your eyes, a symbol that she was completely invested in you..no one else; until somebody said “Ok, time to go!”
Nowadays it’s rare to find a person who will always stop to “shoot the breeze” with you—it’s an old world custom.

To Cindy, Paul, Abby, and the rest of the Laufer family, I send 20 plus years of love and friendship and prayers.

To Mrs. King, who always loved me for me and made me feel important, I say I will miss you dearly. Heaven has certainly gained an angel. I’ll never forget you. My life is far richer for knowing you.

Rest In everlasting love Mrs. King.

Your friend and “adopted grandson” ;)
