To Steve's family and extended family. Steve and I were very close friends since we met at Harvard University. After we finished there we were the odd couple throughout DC as we looked for jobs together, even going to interviews together and letting the prospective employers know it was OK for them to choose whichever of us they preferred. I was shocked to learn today, April 12th, of his passing. He died the day after my mother died and I must say my heart now is full of grief for her and for one of my best friends of over 20 years. I know not what to say as I process this. But know that I grieve and mourn with you. My most heartfelt condolences. Frederic Ruiz-Ramon

Dear Members of Steve's family, friends, colleagues and students, I was deeply saddened to learn of Steve's sudden passing. Please know that I share your sorrow at the loss of this brilliant professor whose thoughtful analyses and contributions took him beyond the classroom to the national stage. It was a privilege and an honor to have known him and to have worked with him. Sincerest condolences, Roseann Runte

Just wanted to say I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. My condolences go out to the Family. I am a neighbor of Steve's in the HT. Many will miss him there as well. He and I have had some good conversations in the past. No matter if he was in a hurry to go teach a class or, hurrying to go wherever, Steve would always take a moment to stop and talk. He had a positive outlook on life and will be sorely missed.

Steve was an inspiring teacher inside and outside the university, as well as being a wonderfully compassionate and humble human being. I will miss all these things and more. It was an honor to have learned from him.
