Stuart Heyman Obituary

Stuart Jay Heyman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, known to everyone as "Skip," passed away September 12, 2020 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. He was 65.

Family was everything to Skip. He was the loving father to Jill, Steven, and Kerry (Craig) and the ex-husband to Marie Seavey. He would lovingly joke, "Best Divorce Ever!" as they continued to be great friends. He was a brother to Beth and Grace and a proud Uncle to Alex (Ashley), Neil, Ronda, Laurel (Chris), Michelle (JP), David, and their children.

Skip was preceded in death by his parents, Norma & Jerome Heyman, his brother, Richard Heyman, his nephew, David Heyman, and his brother-in-law, David Martin. We are certain he is up in heaven reunited with them, telling all of his favorite dad jokes.

Skip dedicated his life to his family, his career, his passion for coaching and teaching, and his love of sports. He loved spending time with his children. Whether it was watching sports, always rooting for their teams unless they were playing Duke, or doing DIY projects, sometimes determining halfway through that he was never doing another Pinterest project again, He was an animal lover to the core and would have adopted the entire SPCA if he could, but instead he rescued dogs throughout his life and enjoyed spoiling his grand-dogs.

Skip spent twenty-five years as an engineer at the Ford Motor Company, eight years as a math teacher at Salem High School in Virginia Beach, and finished his career at Huntington-Ingalls. While he changed jobs several times later in his career, his passion was always for teaching and mentoring. He spent countless hours preparing original lesson plans for his math classes and coaching the school's sports teams. Skip was most fulfilled when he was in a classroom or on the field. He left an imprint on students' lives whether or not he was their teacher.

Skip was Duke University's #1 fan having attended as an undergraduate and serving as President of the Marching Band. He continued to cheer for the Blue Devils long after graduation. He looked forward to every Sunday, when he would stake his claim in goal, playing soccer with and against all of his friends.

Skip will be forever missed and never replaced. He could command the room with his dance moves and laugh, and he gave the best hugs. He will live on in our hearts forever.

Skip was not a fan of pomp and circumstance, but he loved a good party. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, October 10th at 2pm. For details, please email Jill Heyman at [email protected].

Mr. Heyman was THE best teacher in all of my grade school. Always made me feel understood. And I couldn´t get enough of his dad jokes! So terribly sorry I wasn´t at the memorial...

Buster was a great fraternity brother full of spirit. One of the four Jewish members in our pledge class. We always called him from the dinner in nyc preceding the Duke bball game in December. A privilege to have known him.

I've known Skip since Jr High. We were voted Most dependable and Done most for class our senior year. He was one of my dearest friends from my youth
I just learned of his passing recently when inquiring about our 50th class reunion. I can't imagine it without him. He will be missed. My prayers to his family

Skip was a very dear soccer buddy from the very beginning of my time in the old mens' soccer league. Great teammate, always upbeat, reliable, quick wit and full of jokes and stories. He will be dearly missed on the pitch and fondly remembered at "the pub" afterwards. Thanks for being in our goal, Keeper!

Mr. Heyman was my daughters math teacher many years ago and she always spoke so highly of him. I remember that he was always very kind, supportive and encouraging to her, more so than the average teacher because it made a lasting impression on her. My deepest sympathies to your family on the loss of Mr. Heyman.

Mr. Heyman was the kind of dad that everyone wanted as their own. He was genuinely interested in all of Jill’s friends, even long after we all graduated high school. We shared a passion for soccer and he was our biggest fan. He will truly be missed and will always hold a special place in my heart. Much love to the Heyman family.

I had the pleasure of playing both over-40 and over-50 soccer with and against Skip has either a Goalie myself or as a Defender. Those were awesome times we both dearly cherished; before, during and after the games. In addition, both my wife and I enjoyed many hectic nights working the Salem High School Concession Stand with Skip. The evenings were almost always fast-paced and chaotic, but Skip always somehow kept things running smoothly. There always seemed to be a few remaining hot dogs to take home to his beloved dogs. Skip will surely be missed; as I know we will miss him dearly. We send our prayers and condolences to his family.

None of his soccer buddies will forget Skip the Goalie. I remember his distinctive powerful voice — often directing me to defend against attacking players. But after the game he was someone I enjoyed having a blether and a beer with — he had an engaging and kind way about him. He is missed.

Stuart always came in the shop smiling. The several year we worked on project together we had some interesting conversations. I have been gone for several years so it’s been a long time. I’m sure he’ll be missed seemed like such a genuine human being.

He was a wonderful fraternity brother and part of my pledge class. Full of life and the one brother we called from our annual reunion in New York City because he had to handle his teaching duties instead of watching his beloved Blue Devils play. Whenever we have our next reunion I am sure he will receive a toast toward heaven.

Skip was one of a kind, I met him four years ago when my daughter took the field hockey field at Salem High. During these past four years he was a coach, mentor and tutor for my daughter and became our friend. He always turned frowns into smiles, he will he missed by many, football concessions will not be the same without him.

There are just no words to express the loss and grief I am feeling at the loss of one of my dearest friends. Skip was always someone I could rely on to vent to about just about anything. There was always lots of advise whether I took it or not and never any judgement. He was always down for a meal out (especially Mexican) or a party...especially a party! And God, how he loved his family....I hadn't met them until recently but knew all about their lives, and their spouses and significant others and pets and just about everything they did. And as a teacher, well there is no comparison. He loved every one of those kids at Salem High School whether he was their teacher or not, and everyone knew if you had any trouble with math or just didn't feel like going home you could go to Mr. Skips classroom and he was there to help or tell jokes (yes, most were lame, but they loved them) or just listen.
Rest in peace my dear friend. You were taken from us much too soon. See ya on the other side.
