Virginia Granger Obituary

Virginia L. Pope Granger NEWSOMS - Mrs. Virginia Louise Pope Granger of Thomaston Road passed July 10, 2010 in Southampton Memorial Hospital. The Southampton County native was retired from the Southampton County Public School System after 17 years of dedicated service. She was a lifelong member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church and formerly served on the hospitality committee. On Aug. 25, 1950, Virginia was united in holy matrimony to John Lee Granger and to this union nine children were born. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Francis Sears Pope; her husband, John Lee Granger; one child, Paul who was the twin to her daughter, Paula; three brothers, Thomas, James and Robert. She is survived by three daughters, Uneeda Granger-Wilkerson, Franklin, Paula Granger (Howard), Newsoms, Teresa Granger-Artis (Steve), Boykins; five sons, Roger Granger (Myrna), Hampton, Matthew Granger (Mary Ann), Conway, N.C., Sandy Granger (Jean), and Johnnie Granger (Lois), Franklin, Randy Granger, Newsoms; six sisters, Lillie Mae Zollicoffer, Annie Mae Freeman, Thelma Artis, all of Newsoms, Barbara Pope (Hugh), Norfolk, Adele Lewis, Detroit, Fannie Flythe (Raymond), Baltimore; one brother, Benjamin Pope, Franklin; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Granger and Vivian Granger of Portsmouth, Genora Robinson Pope, Waverly, Va.; and other relatives. A life celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 16, in Mount Tabor Baptist Church, 28668 Main St., Newsoms, with the pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Cole delivering the message. Burial is in the church cemetery. A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Inc., 224 South Main St., Franklin.
