Walter Neff Obituary

Walter G. Neff, Jr.
Virginia Beach - Walter George Neff, Jr., 84, of Virginia Beach passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 10, 2013.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953 as a First Lieutenant. He received his Bachelor of Science and his Master's of Business Degrees from NYU.
Mr. Neff began his career in 1946 with Clark Dodge. Following his military service he continued his career with the Bank of New York, where he then moved to United Virginia/Seaboard Bank in Norfolk, VA. He later rejoined Clark Dodge, NYC which ultimately became UBS (United Bank of Switzerland), as Senior Vice President. He was a Charter Financial Analyst since 1966. He was recognized as the oldest institutional broker on Wall Street after more than sixty-five years of service.
His life is one to be celebrated in the same spirit in which Walter, himself celebrated everyday of his 84 years. His shear passion for life was exhibited daily in his love of exotic world travels, hunting, sport fishing, antique cars, sharing cigars, martinis, fine wines and cooking gourmet meals for friends. He was a patron of the arts, and a generous supporter of local area charities. However, his most valued treasure in life was his family and his beloved wife.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 29 years Valerie Neff; his children, Robert Neff (Michele), Debbie Orrigo (Kenneth), Heather Bunge (Tom), Alex Neff (Danielle); 8 grandchildren, Lauren Neff, Clayton Orrigo, Brianna Orrigo-Torcivia (Christopher), Christopher Bunge, Kyle Bunge, Troy Bunge, Bryan Neff, Steven Neff and one more on the way; and he was expecting the arrival of a great granddaughter; his brother, Edwin Neff (Donna); a close cousin, Pete Shrope and wife Pat; nieces and nephews, Laura and Tom Foster, Kyle and Natalie and Alix Neff. Walter was loved dearly and will be missed by his immediate family, as well as his large extended family of close friends.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be conducted 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, 1052 Cardinal Road, Virginia Beach. There will be a reception immediately following the service.
An internment memorial service will be held in September at Ocean City Memorial Park, Toms River, New Jersey.
Services are under the care and direction of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Opera, 160 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, Virginia 23510.
Friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.omanfh.com.

One of the most special men I have ever known. My Dad, Ned Doughty and he had some wonderful times together and I was lucky to share some of those times with both of them. Walter Neff hope you and Dad are enjoying a good cigar and keeping everyone in line. Miss you.

I have so many fond memories of Walter that it’s hard to know where to begin. I didn’t see him often, but when I did, it was always lots of fun and great camaraderie. From duck hunting on the “Love Boat” to fishing and goose hunting in Long Island to oyster shooters in Virginia Beach to drinks at the Union Club, Walter was always memorable. I miss him.

12-24-16, Valerie, We just learned that cousin Skippy had been called home by God 3 years ago. My sympathy to you and the family. I would appreciate your contacting me; we cousins should keep in touch. We were all so close as we grew up in the Neff clan in NJ. This loss hurts my heart, too. Hugs, Joanie Holz [email protected].

I just realized the passing of my very good friend, Walter, today when I remembered that I had not received my traditional Christmas and New Year's greetings from Val and Walter. I met Walter and Valerie in New York when Walter and I worked at Kidder,Peabody. We spent many memorable hours together. Although the years have kept us geographically separated, I will always have a special place in my heart for such a special person.

My deepest condolences to Val and your family. Remember the good times.

Love,
Alex

Walter Neff was a wonderful man. He had the complete respect of all who worked with him.
I remember realizing that he had a CFA and was the first person that I ever worked with that had earned one.
We worked together at Kidder Peabody and I must say that he was always a gentleman who I placed at the top of my list of most admired.
I offer my deepest sympathies to his Family.

Walter Neff, I wish I had known you. From what I read here, it would have been a privilege and a pleasure.

Your brother Ed is grieving, as is his wife Donna. I share their grief and mourn with them for their loss.

So sorry to hear the very sad news about Walter. I have so many good memories of him, especially duck hunting in the old "Love Boat" in the NC marshes. Although I hadn't seen him recently (geographically challenged), Walter touched me, as he did so many people, and my memories of him will be with me for ever. My heart goes out to Valerie and all the Neffs.

Walter was one of the all time greats, so sorry to get this news. Ironically Walter passed away while I was at Tropic Star Lodge - one of his favorite places for big game fishing which he introduced me to 20 years ago - and the whole trip was filled with great memories of Walter and Valerie. I caught a giant blue marlin which I dedicate to Walter and the lifelong passion he inspired for being with friends in the great outdoors. Valerie my best wishes to you and the extended family.

Sending sincerest sympathies to Walter's wonderful wife Valerie and his family. It is hard to imagine a world without Walter in it. He was a great influence on me during the years I had the opportunity to work with him at Kidder Peabody in the late 80's. Our annual Christmas lunches with our little group are among my fondest memories. His was a personality you never forget. I am so very grateful to have known him. We will raise a glass of fine wine to you in Colorado, Walter.

I will always remember Walter at the stove, martini in hand and enough good cigars for everyone after dinner. Whether at their home, where Valerie is hostess extraordinaire, at Bob & Michele's, or even at our home where he brought a full meal and did the finishing touches in my kitchen. It was Walter who took his hippie son & friends (me included) to McSorley's Ale House only several months after they allowed women to enter. Sunset cruises on their boat, their beautiful vegetable & fruit gardens, collections from travels around the world..It was always a treat to be the recipient of Walter's and Valerie's hospitality. John said, "I thought he'd outlive us all", such was the vital life force he possessed. Love and condolences to all, Meredith & John Ward
