it was the ukulele (of course!) that introduced me to the talents and faith of Walter Whitehurst. My very first 'gig' as Jurisdictional Coord was to share in a glorious, love-filled Ind Vol training in Iowa led by the Whitehursts! They both expanded my heart to the many possibilities of serving others . thank you Walt and Betty!

We will keep you Mrs. Betty and your families in our prayers. I remember those times you both visited Resurrection UMC in Chesapeake. I still have the book I bought with his autograph on it.
Pastor Walt will surely be missed. Be blessed

I was so saddened to learn of Walt's passing. Sincerest condolences. We served together on the Senior Alumni Board at his beloved Randolph Macon College for close to a decade. His wisdom and advice was a major contribution to the success of the group. Aside from his guitar playing and selling his Tales from Pungo books he did show his serious side.
Such a life well lives, he'll be sorely missed.go
God bless and comfort the family.

As Walt's publisher, friend and fellow United Methodist missioner, it is with deep sorrow to learn of his passing into eternal life. If anyone ever deserved a crown of glory, it has to be Walt. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Jim and I are so sad to learn of Walt's passing through the veil. Over the years we shared many laughs and some tears. Cruising the Caribbean together last January was a highlight experience which we will treasure for many years to come. Betty and family, our sincere sympathy to all of you in the loss of a wonderful friend, husband, father, grandfather, mentor. . .so many adjectives could be used to fit Walt. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Walt will be dearly missed by his Randolph-Macon College friends, especially the other members of the Boydton Society Executive Committee who always enjoyed his ukulele serenades at the beginning of each meeting.

Dear Whitehurst family I was so sad to learn of his passing. I didn't know him as well as others but the Whitehurst family are such good people. My love and prayers to you all.

A wonderful friend from seminary days at Duke. Whenever there was a big test or paper due, our diversion was to stand in the dorm hall and see who could touch their palms to the floor without bending knees. As in most things, Walt was a winner. He was generous with his faith and a first-class example of what a Christian does, not just saying the right words, but doing the right things. Well done my friend.

Walt with his ukelele has joined the angels with their harps! His life was lived for others as he shared the joy of being a follower of Jesus Christ. Together with Betty no one knows how many lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

Walt and Betty helped shape my time as UMVIM coordinator. They coordinated the first event of my tenure - an Individual Volunteer training in the Iowa Conference. What wisdom, love, care, and planning went into their sessions for all of us newbies to the program! They made missions come alive and dwell in each of our hearts. Fun, fellowship, and ukulele accompaniment were all part of that wondrous journey into preparing for the mission field. Thank You!

I am greatly saddened at his passing. He and Betty have been dear friends and mentors for many years.
His love and kindness live on through so many.
There are too many memories to pick one, but I know heaven now has a stellar ukulele player now.
With love and prayers to Betty, Monica, David and Bruce,

It is with great sorrow to hear of Walter's passing. He and my late husband, Arturo Chacón, were close friends from the 1950s when Walter first came to Chile as a young and dedicated missionary. The Whitehurst and Chacón families have had close reunions in Chile, Canada, USA and Mexico over the years.
My love to all the family together with precious memories.
