Wayne A. Childress

PORTSMOUTH â€" Major Wayne Alan Childress, Ret., 60, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 in a local hospital. He was born on November 30, 1958 in Richmond, VA to Gloria J. Ware and the late Carroll C. Childress; and was a former City of Hampton police officer. Wayne entered the U.S. Army in 1976 and retired in 2003 as a Major with over 27 years of service. After retirement, he continued to work for the U.S. Army as a Senior Program Analyst at Ft. Eustis. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Portsmouth; the VA National Guard Association and the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara.In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Gina Ayers Childress; a daughter, Melissa Raynard and fiancé Steve Peed; a son, Michael Raynard and his wife Anna; three sisters, Wanda Allen, Kellie Ware and Lisa Bowen; three brothers, Doug Allgood, Scott Harris and Carroll “CCâ€� Childress, Jr.; and host of extended family and friends.A funeral service will be held at 10 AM Thursday, January 10, 2019 in Central Baptist Church by Dr. Steve Grieme. Burial with full military honors will follow in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery.
